Karls 3.0 TDI build thread

So its a bit of hope for the best? Any idea what pump my 2012 245hp has?

Any what now?
How do you increase pressure, is it just part of the remapping?

...is this a good thing? How do you increase pump pressure over standard?

It's a good thing. You can increase pump pressure by requesting more in the map. However you are normally limited by certain hardware like the rail pressure sensor. I wouldn't worry about lack of fuel with a hybrid with that pump.

Thanks Karl much appreciated! Thats a one concern ticked off.
ive had owen developments quote me for a gt2865hta. They've told me it'll be pretty quick spooling and capable of upto 400hp. What are your thoughts comparing to a hybrid? Cost wise it'll be a few hundred pounds more expensive..

That turbo doesn't appear to be a VNT item, It's designed for use with petrol cars. It's not that you can't use these kind of turbos on diesels but actually without the VNT mechanism the response would be fairly lousy I would have thought. Great when it comes on boost at 3- 3.5K rpm.
Also you would need a seperate wastegate.
Is your car a daily driver or a race track refugee ?

Brake discs have arrived. Look nice, hopefully they will work as well as they look :) . They are handed so need to make sure I fit them to the right side of the car :) .

Modified my £8.50 Ebay fog light grills, Quite impressed with the quality.

Hopefully finish of the brake cooling mods and fit the discs and calipers at the weekend as long as it doesn't rain.

Hi Karl,

Just read your whole thread, your car and work is very impressive, it has been an interesting read.

Ah man. Im glad i mentioned it now! Well i told them what car it was intended for and they told me the turbo would be quick spooling. Am i better off with a hybrid then?
Its my daily drive Karl so needs to be useable power. Thanks for your input mate.

Finally got around to getting the car remapped with the Hybrid on. Thanks to @Rick @ Unicorn Motor Dev. who mapped it first time has now upgraded to a 4WD dyno so we could do all the mapping for the hybrid on the dyno.
Nice comfy waiting room.

There is a window into the dyno cell next door so you can see the car .
This is mine on the dyno.

And the result from a few hours of work from Rick and Mario.

Pretty much on the button for what I wanted. The car picks up better from low RPM and once the turbo spools it shifts along quite nicely :) .
With the Water methanol on it made another 5bhp so 387bhp and pretty much the same torque.
Can't wait to get it back down the strip and see what it will do . Hopefully get into the 12's.

Karl.

Not quite sure why that is there. The car was mapped several times slowly increasing boost and altering Lamda maps and the like. You could see that dip developing as the power was increased.
As far as smoke it's pretty good. Driving normal no smoke at all and if you hoof it at a roundabout or junction it just leaves a bit of smoke.
Sustained flat out is what I would call a light grey haze.
This is a video of the final run. There are large fans in the front of the cell that blow air in and then 2 fans at the rear in the roof that take it out.
Not super clean like yours but outside it's not too bad.

There is an uprated clutch available mine is rated at 730nm or 750nm i got it from Sachs in Germany the part maybe 1861v it's the v that makes it uprated. Can't find the link but I did look it up online and got the full parts list somewhere

Great build this,very impressive.

Do the diesel clutch/flywheel upgrades fit the S4 B8 by chanced you know ?

Is that a clutch for the B8 3.0 TDI ? . As the clutch fitted in these cars is not like a normal single clutch plate. It is a double clutch arrangement with a normal friction plate and another friction plate inside the pressure plate. Thus the car essentially has two 230mm clutches. Thats why the standard clutch seems to cope with 750Nm as thats only 375Nm or 275 ft/lb per clutch.
I had a look in the Sachs Web catalog and I can only find a standard clutch. I am not aware of anybody that does an uprated clutch for these.

I am not sure. If it was a reasonably easy mod I wouldn't be surprised if somebody has already done it.

It is indeed forgot you had the twin plate clutch on the b8

Great result karl! Think im going to get on the phone tmo and start organising mine

Karl, followed your build thread for years on ukpassats and was amazed then, this is brilliant! Good work.

Maybe a bit more boost would clear the smoke
What rail pressure are you running?
Any idea what the IQ is now @ 4k?

Good to know cp1 is coping

Did some logs last night and it's holding 1800 bar rail pressure at 95IQ with no issues. Did a 3rd into 4th gear acceleration run flat out and the EGT just made it to 750 degrees which I was surprised at, as I expected it to run higher than that. Possibly why the water meth never made that much difference.
It's running the 3.0 BI-TDI MAF so hopefully getting what appear to be accurate readings from the MAF.
On the road it's fine as regards smoke when driving normally, hoof it and it's not to bad , I have seen a lot worse. Maybe a tweak to the boost might clear some smoke but a lot of it comes from when the turbo is spooling.

Karl you sure you logged the correct egt sensor? that sounds like after turbine reading. With the fuel and smoke I would expect 900 to 950

Yes thats what I thought too, Had too double check and it's the EGT before the turbo.

That smoke you see is when it's spooling, lambda is set quite rich there, around 0.9. That's the price of spooling up a big turbo

The power dip isn't really a dip, it just stops climbing so steeply as peak torque drops off. The engine then seems to be able to hold on to the lower torque we are requesting and so power climbs more steeply again. One of the challenges here is for torque not to get out of control, so a lot of work is spent trying to profile the torque curve, against what the engine and turbo naturally wants to do. I think we could do more but we have to remember this is Karl's daily that he tows a caravan with. Mrs Desertstorm would not be too happy with a broken clutch plate, parked up in your local seaside village lay by complete with an ABI Marauder in tow!

Rick

Is the bi turbo tdi maf a worthwhile upgrade and can it be used before the car is mapped or does it need mapping in?

Amazing thread, I've been following this for some time but just become a member. Great car and an amazing job you've done! A true inspiration!
I also drive a A4 3.0 tdi Quattro Avant, only mods is a Superchips bluefin (295ps). But it does quite well, 70-130 (km/h) in 5,2s on third gear.

But after reading your thread I want more haha

Cheers!
