FMIC

Yeah... didn't realise how big until it turned up at the door!!! Realised then that I wouldn't be able to fit it without mods...

The one from AH has been built to fit straight in, I will update the thread with pics and the like when I have it fitted.

FYI, Badger Bill kindly logged my car last night to see what the AIT's were doing on the std SMIC's. Outside temp was 16 ish degrees, under boost the AIT's rose to around 70 degrees then settled back at 50-55 deg but was getting increasingly hotter off boost as the SMICs heat soaked.

We are going to have another run once the FMIC is on and will post up the results.

:sign_ot:
By any chance did you see what Bill logged in VAGCOM to record the inlet temp readings? I put a post up in the VAGCOM section yesterday but nobody has answered yet.

No worries pal lol.

So how much is it all going to cost tuffty?

For my FMIC I did my own pipework etc and got my intercooler from ths performance. Think the overall cost was around £400 or so. I did things slightly different as I wanted my engine bay not to have all the pipework in so used reversed large port intake manifold. The result came out pretty good. (Thanks to my brother(RichA3Turbo) for the ideas).

Jay whats the ttda intake and new maf housing like?
Notice any difference when fitted?
Worth getting or not?

Ok...

Details of the AH Fabrications made FMIC...

Got the core dimensions from this thread..
http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/showthread.php?t=65338

Used the Forge fitting guide pdf of the Forge website to gauge what was needed for end tanks and pipe/hose requirements.

The outlet pipes are 51mm as things are tight if you want to keep fogs and the like. Cost of the FMIC made for me is £300 but thats including some initial development cost. Alex suggests that if they had to make more now they would be cheaper as they will have to patterns and dimensions.

The list of pipes and hoses are:

2 x 51mm 45deg silicone elbows
2 x 60mm to 51mm 90deg silicone reducers
2 x 51mm 45deg aluminium pipes
2 x 60mm aluminium hose joiners
[FONT=&quot]1 x 60mm hose piece to replace short piece off MAP sensor tube

I sourced these from ebay:
http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/mrsilicone/

All this came to just under £100 posted

EDIT>> The 51mm 45 degree aluminium pipes are a bit of a gamble at the moment. In the Forge fitting pdf they use fabricated ones. I as yet don't know if that is because 45 degrees is incorrect or maybe too short etc... I will find out when it all arrives as I will try a dry fit before I visit AH on Thursday. If there is anything different I will update the thread...<< EDIT

I bought some T-Clamps too, just didn't fancy using jubilee clips..
Got them from ebay too:
http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/jap_partz/

6 x 54mm-62mm clamps
6 x 67mm-75mm clamps

I also bought an extra 67mm-75mm and a 73mm-81mm clamp as I am replacing the top hoses with Forge ones.

This lot came to just over £30

I cut the crash bar myself using an angle grinder and a cutting disc (sourced from ebay)

I am going to AH next Thursday morning to sort out the brackets and hopefully will have it all fitted for GTI International when I go on Saturday (I got a stand pass!!!)

I won't have time to paint it black for the stealth look but will sort that after hopefully.

Assuming further FMIC's AH build will be cheaper, you should get it all sorted for around £400

Think im going to wait for you todo it first then see the outcome and a tutorial haha.

ill you be keepig the hose thatcomes off the charge pipe and the one that connects to the inlet manifold?

Unfortunately, I can't say as my car was completely stock and then I did the whole lot in one hit. One minute it had 150bhp then went straight to 320bhp so I can't comment on each individual mod. From what I've heard and reading it is worth getting though. My brother (RichA3Turbo) was running the same MAF / TTDA too for a few years and he was very pleased with it hence why I went for that setup.

Good man Paul cheers for the info. Good luck with the installation. I may be contacting AH if yours fits sweet. The main pita is getting a core that isn't to thick, once you have that doing the pipe work should be childs play.

Should be fine Tim, if they don't get it right they will make another until they do... you guys will get the benefit though as they will be cheaper once they got it cracked..

I will mention it to Alex next time I speak to him.

My forge one arrived ahead of schedule with awesome. Gonna phone tomorrow to arrange but Ive allready spent lots this month so might have to wait till end of month to arrange full payment lol.

Not gonna fit it will end of july anyway when I have time off.

Ok, bit of an update.... The hoses and pipes arrived today. Here is a pic of them with the clamps...

...one small problem... one of the 60mm alloy joiners was actually a 57mm one!!! I have contacted the seller but as yet no reply. Hopefully if it turns up Friday I can still get it fitted for GTI.

I did a test fit to see how the piping would come together. All went fairly well.... the passenger side SMIC was a bit of a git to get off as one of the bolts holding it on was under the battery tray so it was rather a slow process to remove.

Once the SMIC's were off, I offered up the pipes to see what was what and offered up the bumper too. I think there will need to be a little tweakage here and there as even with the 'Forge' spec pipes its very tight.

Couple more pics...

I have also bought some THS upper boost pipes rather than Forge as the deal I was getting from a mate fell through so rather than worry about it, I bought a set fromm thier ebay store:

Will post up some more pics after Thursday trip to AH....

fitted mine today, its good fun.. need to get a kit with less piping though..

get some pix up soon.

TUFTY- when i was down AH last week for a flying visit alex did say you were booked in! good to hear someone saw the light!:icon_thumright: he was asking me about mine too for the TDI conversion but i just dont have the time just now due to opening my business... but pleased you got booked in and you will be very pleased with the outcome :icon_thumright:... If you time it right they normally have a chocy binge just after lunch lol! Oh and wind matt up ask him where my breather is i've been waiting for 6 months for!? lol :p

nice one tufty, looking good mate...... are the fogs looking like stayers with the bends that you have? that looks like the same kit i was going to buy a while back....also what sort of strength are the rigid pipes (i was concerned that they may buckle with the clips tightened too much)

Fogs look like they are going to stay, drivers side is tight but until the cooler is fitted its difficult to say exactly.

The alloy pipes are a good couple of mm thick and I don't have any reason to think they won't be up to the task.

Didn't think it did, I may look into it later if AIT's are still high but I am hoping this will be a one stop solution.

I know Glen (Ess_Three) used a modified golf sidemount but the bottom outlet on the OEM one makes for a tight turn, seems a lot of work for little gain.

On a track day at silverstone my car did suffer from heat soak as it was a hot muggy day. after 2 or so laps the car felt almost faulty. but has just down to a massive raise in the intake temps from working the turbo hard.

Hi Paul,
I took my car on a trackday at Silverstone too last summer. It's a pretty tough ciruit eh.
I have the Backdraft 325 kit fitted, and I never experienced any heat soak at all. It was also very hot day that day too as I remember. The car ran as strong at the beginning as it did at the end of the session.

I have a fmic on my car, so I would suggest you get one fitted if you're going to be doing trackdays.

One thing I think did happen, is my brembo brakes got ******.

Btw, what's the JBS kit like?

Cheers,
Glen

Agree tim, glad someone's finally knocked one up.

Just got an email from Alex at AH with pictures attached of the FMIC!!! WooHoo!!

...just the mounting brackets to do :arco:

<tuffty/>

Tuffty, what did you say you where doing with map sensor again!

Not doing anything with it, no need to... I don't know if APY engined S3's are different but my MAP sensor is in a tube running by the battery so no need to do owt... Is yours like A3's were the map sensor is in the top tank of the drivers side SMIC??

If thats the case then Forge do a alloy tube that can be used in the plumbing somewhere to mount it.

<tuffty/>

No think mines the same as yours, its seated on a metal pipe near the battery.
Will the pipe kit you've put together just fit onto this!

Yeah, I'll take some more pics when I fit it all properly... I did take some yesterday but they are a little fuzzy.

Essentially, you use a 60mm alloy joiner to come off the top hose from the charge pipe to the 60mm > 51mm 90 degree reducer. then use the 51mm alloy 45 deg elbow to the 51mm 45 deg silicone elbow to the FMIC, mirror this on the other side only where the 60mm end of the 90 deg reducer goes, 60mm alloy joiner to the 60mm silicone joiner which then attaches to the MAP sensor tube.
