its the braided pipes that run between the injectors and also to the pump. they look aged and if they start to leak they can fairly spray out fuel. I try and change mine at least every 18 month to be honest

Oh there sound its just the black sound/heat stuff was trashed under the plastics

yea pictures can be deceiving.
I normally keep a length of it in my boot side pockets as Ive been caught out with a diesel leak from one when we were out and about.
so is you're car the 110 or 90 bhp?

110 bhp few minor problems other than what ive posted but ill get there slowly :) big learning curve from minis escorts ect

ahh so that's the classics youve been into.. glad to hear it.

yea the 110bhp is a good reliable lump.
ive lost count on how many ive had.

so... off topic.. what escorts have you had?
my brother restored a mk2 1600 sport a few years back that he still has and is just finishing off his mk2 rs200

The breather pipe had since been modified from the days B5's were built into a one piece pipe rather than the two piece. It is a little more fiddly in my opinion, to fit a one piece but doable. I wouldn't risk fitting a second hand one as that will be as brittle as yours is. They're not expensive. Think mine was £17 for a Topran branded one off an auction bay site.

Thanks for the help guys got the part from vw this morning £12.60 direct so not to bad
