you can pressurise your cooling system using a tyre foot pump connected to the small connection on the right hand side of the header tank.
no need for expensive equipment.

I have a 2001 1.6 sport 5dr AVU that needs a rear silencer.
there is one on ebay but it is from a 3dr AKL.
does anyone know if this will fit? the parts database in the stickies suggests it will.

I have a 2001 1.6 sport and when I got the car it was blank like yours. I re coded it with vag com so it displays the outside temperature but it has no other functions except doors / boot open and warnings.

Restored my headlights.
I used 800 Grit wet and dry followed by 2000 Grit then Plast-RX and a soft foam pad attached to my drill.

The thermostat could be a problem with the wiring or in the thermostat itself. was it replaced with a genuine item?
if you need to replace the thermostat i have a new, genuine one available

The compressor gets it drive from the belt, via an electromagnetic clutch (that's what the wire is for).To check the clutch is engaging, turn on th air con and look at the centre part of the pulley end of the compressor. It should be spinning.You can also normally 'feel' it as the clutch engages.
Sorry mate, but you're wrong. On the 1.6 engines the thermostat is map controlled and thus has an electrical connection.Costs around £50 to replace too!OP:You really need to do a scan with vcds to see if there are any error codes logged.
i need a new o/s outer cv joint for my 2001 A3 1.6 sport AVU
my question is, are these outer joints the same accross all A3s and golfs etc or do they differ from model to model?
My driveshaft is the 30mm 12 point nut version if it makes any difference

When i did mine on my 1.6 i took the plastic air intake off the top of the engine then had to remove the heatshield from the exhaust manifold.

There's two screws concealed under black plastic covers at each end at top of the door card. These covers slide up to reveal the screws. Then just lift the whole card up and it will release from the clips.
Coolant leak could be from the plastic connection block on the right side of engine. Look for pink residue left by leaking coolant.
as for oil leak, put some cardboard under engine and you can see where any leak is coming from.
if you can't see any signs of oil or coolant loss then it may be...
