Intermittent clutch slip

Hi All,
2011 A4 Avant manual 6 speed 2.0 TDI 140, noticed when driving yesterday when accelerating in 6th from around 1600 rpm in top gear the clutch seems to slip for a couple of seconds, it doesn't happen all the time infact yesterday was the first time I ve noticed it tho I don't drive it as much as the wife who doesn't think it's happened when she's being driving
Could this be a sticking pressure plate or perhaps an oil seal issue, no doubt it'll need to develop before a diagnosis can be made
would you contact Audi now incase this is a warranty job

How many miles has the car done ? .Sounds like the clutch to me, If it's a clutch or an oil seal the gearbox will need to come off and I would of thought a clutch wouldn't be covered under warranty especially if the car has some miles on it.

Hi Karl, just turned 30k
Seems fine 99% of the time under load etc never missed a beat, doesn't skip under harsh acceleration through the gears or 9 times outa 10 if you let it pull from low down in sixth.
I thought I was imagining it at first, but twice yesterday it happened pulling from low revs on the motorway

At only 30K there shouldn't obviously be an issue with the clutch. Doesn't have a tow bar does it ? .
Just trying to think what the dealer will say if you turn up with a 30K car and say the clutch is slipping.
Depending on what they find if they do take it apart if it's not an obvious manufacturing fault with the clutch or a parts failure then you may have to pay for some of the work.

Clutch is definitely not covered under warranty.

I maybe didn't make such a good job of explaining myself, I totally understand the clutch not being a warranty item as it's wear and tear, my question is Is the intermittent slip signs of maybe a sticky pressure plate or possibly an oil seal issue? 30k is nowhere near enough miles in a bog standard non modded car to wear a clutch out surely
 
I have the exact same issue as you sometimes it slips and then the next day I can't make it slip at all even by dipping the clutch in a high gear :/ so I have booked in for a new clutch and flywheel so see if that sorts it lol mine has just gone 50k
 
Quick update guys,
I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place,at least that's how it feels, should Audi remove the box and find a fault to cause the intermittent slipping clutch then they'll repair under warranty, if it's wear and tear its £1497 and a few pence, so do you go with your gut instict and give Audi the car, take the risk of it coming back at £1497 odd or go to and independent for a third of that price only to discover you could of had it done for free under warranty?
Should anyone have a crystal ball I can borrow pls feel free to holla
 
Can you not take it to another garage get the clutch done and them take to Audi for inspection???

I wondered that but I think Audi would knock that back as there's no way you could prove its the clutch plate etc from your car, strangely VW main dealer only want £874 to replace the clutch, so unless Audi are also changing the flywheel why over £600 difference for the same clutch
I'm sure the answer is at the bottom of this whiskey bottle
 
It will be for the flywheel too I would say, yes that may be a problem with proving it is from your car, I am going through a similar thing to you mine is booked in at another garage tommorow for clutch & flywheel £800 all in, I have been told I am allowed to take my car to another garage for the work doing as mine is a juddering flywheel & clutch slip. We will see what comes of it when I ring the Dealer to say its been done but I suspect nothing :(
 
Audi are ringing back tomorrow to give me there best guess, after that it'll be decision time, I notice if your car is 3 years or over and 2.0 ltr or under Audi will fit a clutch for £749, mine will be 3 years old at the end of June, I wonder if she'll go till then lol
 
If that's just a clutch then that is expensive, like I say mines clutch and flywheel and bearing for £800 all in. Mine started slipping 2 week ago and it isn't a daily driver but it is now on its last legs slipping really bad.
 
Noticed this on Sunday for the 1st time,only happens once in a blue moon but the wife drives it daily so it needs sorted, it doesn't judder pulling away, only slips when you put your foot down in top gear. From 1600 revs,climbs to 2000 n slips for a couple of seconds then bites and returns to normal, seems to happen on,y when it's up to temp on a decent run
 
I had to have my Clutch & Flywheel replaced as it just out of the blue went and started burning without no sign or slipping beforehand.
I just went to give it a little blast and it just revved and didn't go anyway and the clutch were burning. 27000 miles not even 3 years old but i do suspect it is the remap hence i have put it back to stock.
Audi wanted £2000 for it and they would of put £1000 towards it if it weren't remapped so i took it elsewhere and had it done for £800 instead and get 2 years warranty with it.

I know i realized, its back to stock now anyway. I told Revo about it and they were adamant that it were not the Revo software.
 
Those things you come to expect when you've remapped, this is totally stock,tho I'm now wondering if it's worth upgrading the clutch while it's out, if I'm paying I may as well put in what I want.

Thing is, when i asked Revo before i got it done would i have any problems with the clutch they said there will be no problems whatsoever!
 
Spoken to an Audi specialist this morning, they have just done another A4 with the same fault, apparently there's an upgrade for the clutch master cylinder,tho Audi Newcastle say not, Audi Newcastle are however going to investigate the problem and tell me what is, FOC,wether its covered under warranty and if not, if not how much to rectify. So until I've an answer from Audi I'll just hold my breath and pray my gut instinct is right and there's an underlying problem

Hi drew baby, what was the final conclusion on this problem?

My old man has a car that is doing the same exact thing, he was about to buy a clutch and flywheel on advise from a dealer, but I drove the car yesterday and clutch is fine not slipping and the flywheel is also fine with no vibration.....

I won't let him go get it changed now as seems like a different issue to me......

It's been a year now and although it still slips for a split second every now and then ta got no worse really, I've towed my caravan 1400 kgs with the car and it never missed a beat, I've driven 600 mile round trips and had no problem, I'm convinced it's not the clutch as it would stall rather than slip, I'm not losing any clutch fluid, there's no bangs or knocks it doesn't slip under load
It's a mystery why once every blue moon it slips for a split second but I can live with it, I'm certainly not paying good money out to take the gearbox out and replace the clutch when in my opinion it's not the problem

Did Audi change the master cylinder after?

On what you have said I think I'll tell him to stay driving and not fork out a fortune for a new clutch and flywheel...
 
Mine has started the exact same problem as described above. Clutch started slipping at approx 1800rpm when accelerating hard in 4th/5th/6th. Car is just shy of 60,000 miles.

Then it mysteriously disappeared and I was gunning it in 6th from 45-50mph and it was strong and couldn't replicate the slip again. My mechanic said it could be any number of things - possibly the self adjuster which hadn't caught up with wear, a bit of surface rust on the input shaft splines, or the release bearing was a bit sticky. I am not getting any other sinister noises or judder.

Likewise with the members above there is no way I am forking out a four figure sum of money (which I don't have...) unless I get a consistent issue.
 
Hi Andrew and everybody

I'm new to the forum and own an A4 3.2 2008 (B8) manual. Only 35.000 miles. Quite impressed with the car, quatro, engine, B&O but got exactly the same problem as the original poster. I understand Andrew chose to live with it for a while, but i would love to know if you or anybody else having this problem have found the cause. Did the clutch die and changing it solved the problem? Would appreciate any thoughts.

After an initial chat with Audi, they hinted it might be clutch and/or flywhell and/or an 'x-factor'. So i'm looking at a big bill (2000-2500 USD) for starters.

As a sidenote, i bought the car like this about 2 months ago and drove it already 6.000 miles on the autobahn in germany and in the mountains in France - problem did not get worse and actually i thought it was normal (like the way Audi tunes the car to be on the soft, comfortable side). i'm just amazed how the clutch is still alive now.
