Had my eye on a cracking s3 8 month old all the trmmings only too find out the road tax is £450 for FIVE years now i was willing to budget for the car and fuel cost but thsts just broke me , gutted!
Not totally fair, you can’t pay VED in monthly instalments, whereas buying the car you can. Yes we could all save £20 a month (actually more like £40) but in reality that’s often easier said than done.Unfortunately, if you can't afford another 5 quid a week you really couldn't afford it in the first place.

New car tax rates are really quite cheeky, and go against all the government rubbish about pushing towards environmentally friendly motors.
My insurance went from £2500 to £4500 a year whilst waiting to take delivery of my S3. You just have to make lifestyle changes sometimes. No weekly visits for my crabbies ginger bear at sainsburys. No weekly takeaways, no more lunch over the road at work, countless packets of pringles and thai chillie sensations. Less trips to the pub, less generosity to other people, less wastage in money on games. But it's OK because I have an S3.
Nono, don't let that fool you.So youre now skinny with an S3 !
Thought you could pay the V.E.D in monthly payments these days?.
Thought you could pay the V.E.D in monthly payments these days?.
You can, but it's not £450 it's £472 / 12 so £39 a month, Hardly a bank breaker, given all other costs associated with these cars.
Thanks for the input guys ! No im not christiano ronaldo but im not in the poor hiuse either but i think the principal of the thing just hacks me off
Totally agree !
Totally agree, it is a con and a rip off, but if £40 a month makes or breaks the deal, I really wouldn't get the car is all I think most people are getting at.
Its not about affording it or not
How much is your road tax zaka7 ?
Ah well it's a choice we all have or will have to make in the future, personally it didn't stop me from choosing my current car , and probably won't stop the next time, it is what it is to be honest
There is quite a bit of confusion around the £40k threshold, but DVLA state it is the :I was lucky and found a facelift 17 plate s3 sb with enough options on just under the 40k
Its £140 roadtax
£310 extra if it was over £40k list with options (there is confusion with Audi re the on the road costs and whether they are included in that 40k, they arent, DVLA confirmed this)
You can pay in installments monthly, but your best bet is to try and find a car under 40k list with the right options
The salesguy that sold me the car thought it was £450 but I rang DVLA and they checked it, so it was a bonus as I was up for paying it if I had to !
I wasn’t aware that these s3’s cost that sort of money. This is only my opinion but if tech is not your thing like it is for me, you could get a pre owned mk2 PFL rs3 for that sort of money.

So you can afford to buy a car worth £30k+, but you can't afford £1.23 a day in road tax? As already stated, maybe over stretching to buy the car in the first place was the wrong thing to do. What happens if you need tyres? Just not bother?
Plus, it may be £450 a year, but it's only a couple hundred quid (less than 3 tanks of fuel) more than it was before the new VED bands.
If you were stretching that much, then maybe go for a 2 or 3 year old S3, or look at the S1. Cracking cars by all accounts.

That's woman maths right there.I think it's a bit unfair to have a dig at the OP about paying the extra per month, he has set a limit as to what he is willing to pay per month/year on a car and maintenance and that is it, it's his business! I personally think he is being sensible, set a limit and stick to it no matter if it's a car, house, holiday etc.
We have all done it, we go out with a figure in our heads to buy a certain item, then you up it by £30, then you say oh for another £15 I can have that one there, this goes on and on and before you know it your £200 item has cost you £400.

Very fair point. With cars getting more expensive, insurance going up, fuel etc etc. These things all add up.I think it's a bit unfair to have a dig at the OP about paying the extra per month, he has set a limit as to what he is willing to pay per month/year on a car and maintenance and that is it, it's his business! Can I ask why your insurance went up so much?
Flippin eck mate, you gave up a whole lot of stuff just to have an S3, personally I would have give up the wife/kids/dog but then you would be alone in your own house without having to listening to whining wife/kids, walking the dog,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,wait a minute, what a good idea, I think I'll ditch it all and buy an S car, what a way to get oldMy insurance went from £2500 to £4500 a year whilst waiting to take delivery of my S3.
