Buy one registered before 1st April 2017 or one with a list price of less than 40k

Google ‘car tax 40000’ and hit the first link.

Unfortunately, if you can't afford another 5 quid a week you really couldn't afford it in the first place.

Not totally fair, you can’t pay VED in monthly instalments, whereas buying the car you can. Yes we could all save £20 a month (actually more like £40) but in reality that’s often easier said than done.
New car tax rates are really quite cheeky, and go against all the government rubbish about pushing towards environmentally friendly motors.

So you can afford to buy a car worth £30k+, but you can't afford £1.23 a day in road tax? As already stated, maybe over stretching to buy the car in the first place was the wrong thing to do. What happens if you need tyres? Just not bother?

Plus, it may be £450 a year, but it's only a couple hundred quid (less than 3 tanks of fuel) more than it was before the new VED bands.

If you were stretching that much, then maybe go for a 2 or 3 year old S3, or look at the S1. Cracking cars by all accounts.

Ah well it's a choice we all have or will have to make in the future, personally it didn't stop me from choosing my current car , and probably won't stop the next time, it is what it is to be honest

I was dead set on not spending >£40k on my next car, when I heard of the revised VED figures......previous car was a 64-plate Merc CLS which cost a whole lot more, but was less than £200/year VED.....

I had spec'd up a suitable S3, keeping just under threshold, but in the end went with the fab one I have, which priced at £40,345 list, with a better discount than I could have achieved elsewhere, and will suck up the £450 VED for 2yrs (got circa. £1k more discount than I had managed anywhere else so this covers 2x £450 #manmaths!)

I was lucky and found a facelift 17 plate s3 sb with enough options on just under the 40k

Its £140 roadtax

£310 extra if it was over £40k list with options (there is confusion with Audi re the on the road costs and whether they are included in that 40k, they arent, DVLA confirmed this)

You can pay in installments monthly, but your best bet is to try and find a car under 40k list with the right options

The salesguy that sold me the car thought it was £450 but I rang DVLA and they checked it, so it was a bonus as I was up for paying it if I had to !

Agree with above, if the £450 tax is too much then you're looking and the wrong car.

Monthly affordability is one thing but there isn't much of a plan B if things go wrong here.

My insurance went from £2500 to £4500 a year whilst waiting to take delivery of my S3. You just have to make lifestyle changes sometimes. No weekly visits for my crabbies ginger bear at sainsburys. No weekly takeaways, no more lunch over the road at work, countless packets of pringles and thai chillie sensations. Less trips to the pub, less generosity to other people, less wastage in money on games. But it's OK because I have an S3.

Nono, don't let that fool you.

I'm still a hefty unit :D

Takes me half a year to lose half a stone, then I go on holiday and put it all back on, another 6 months and it's Christmas and it all goes back on and so the cycle continues :D

Thought you could pay the V.E.D in monthly payments these days?.

You can, but it's not £450 it's £472 / 12 so £39 a month, Hardly a bank breaker, given all other costs associated with these cars.

I can see the OPs point and wouldnt want to pay it myself either, its a con by the Gov, because they messed up big time when they got rid of the tax disc, now theres a massive shortfall in tax so instead of reinstating the tax disc, theyve decided to hit motorists another way.

Totally agree, it is a con and a rip off, but if £40 a month makes or breaks the deal, I really wouldn't get the car is all I think most people are getting at.

Its not about affording it or not

How much is your road tax zaka7 ?

The way I read it is that the OP was getting the S3 until he had to include budget for £450 road tax, apologies if that is wrong, it is just how I read it.

My road tax is the daylight robbery of £450.

I wasn’t aware that these s3’s cost that sort of money. This is only my opinion but if tech is not your thing like it is for me, you could get a pre owned mk2 PFL rs3 for that sort of money.

Agreed! We're all in different positions regarding budget. Personally, in the scheme of things, VED wouldn't put me off on it's own. If needs be, I'd scrimp on something else to make it work.
But I get the OP's point if they were looking at a specific used car which won't hang around forever. Just means they'll look at an alternative I guess.

I was reading this thread thinking, the S3 must be highly specced to be over £40k.

However, just a quick check on the Audi configurator, has shocked me. An S3 Saloon is now £38k basic !!! That's shot up !

I got my S3 saloon in 2015, and basic (if I remember) was around £33k. Mines a decent spec too, and with discount I only paid £34k.

Probably goes back to the PCP thread, and the ever rising price of cars V's monthly payments making them affordable.

There is quite a bit of confusion around the £40k threshold, but DVLA state it is the :

The list price is the individual retail price published by the manufacturer, importer or distributor for the vehicle if sold in the UK. The list price for electric vehicles is the list price before any grants or discounts. The list price must be provided as it stands on the day before the date from which the vehicle will be taxed and registered.

The list price or notional price includes any options added by the manufacturer before delivery to the dealer/retailer. The list price also includes any delivery charges for the vehicle, including any pre-delivery inspection costs and VAT. The price also includes the price it would be to buy any leased items i.e. electric batteries.

Any options fitted by the retailer are not included in the list price. Also any incentive options such as track days, servicing or warranties.

HTH :)

I think it's a bit unfair to have a dig at the OP about paying the extra per month, he has set a limit as to what he is willing to pay per month/year on a car and maintenance and that is it, it's his business! I personally think he is being sensible, set a limit and stick to it no matter if it's a car, house, holiday etc.

We have all done it, we go out with a figure in our heads to buy a certain item, then you up it by £30, then you say oh for another £15 I can have that one there, this goes on and on and before you know it your £200 item has cost you £400.

Very fair point. With cars getting more expensive, insurance going up, fuel etc etc. These things all add up.

Guess it's down to ones financial situation and logic, even if you can afford the extra £xxx a year it doesn't mean it's money well spent.

Ask a 23 year old in ten years time though who never knew it cost £175~ to tax an s3 and they won't think twice about it. Assuming the £40k thing is here to stay it's now the norm and we have to deal with it.

Flippin eck mate, you gave up a whole lot of stuff just to have an S3, personally I would have give up the wife/kids/dog but then you would be alone in your own house without having to listening to whining wife/kids, walking the dog,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,wait a minute, what a good idea, I think I'll ditch it all and buy an S car, what a way to get old :rockwoot:
