Prawn and BigAls A3 Track Car

Yea I'm sure. 200/610/17 is a slick size, which is
A bit different to a road tyre. 200 refers to the tread width, although it is often larger than stated. My 200 slicks measure 222mm across the contact patch. 610 refers to the overall tyre diameter in mm, and 17 is of course the rim diameter.
Paul: it'd be great if you popped along, be good to see what you think of my budget track car build!

Hahaha. Feck. Just noticed the typo!

622mm! Haha. It'd look like a monster truck!

You win dude. 222mm is what I ment!

I dont think it will be a problem, worth comparing the width against the 225 tyres, but from what i can work out there either equal to 200/45/17 or 220/40/17 this being based on 17"=431.8mm so 610-431.8 = 178.2/2=89.1 which is approx 45% of 200 or 40% or 220

My understanding is the 225 on normal road tyres refers to the width of the tyre at its widest point so if your measure 222 then i cant see any issues, although your speedo may be out due to running a thinner side wall.

Thanks man. Sounds about right. 225 does
Refer to the widest point across the carcass, when fitted to the correct width rim.

Be interesting to see what it's like on slicks at some point. Not sure of
Combe would let me out on slicks though. Some tracks will

pretty sure the coombe doesnt allow slicks! could be wrong though...

Got a feeling you're right Barter. I'm sure I'll do a trackday at some point this year that'll allow slicks.

Trying to find a paint shop near me at the moment that can supply me the orange paint I need!

Hellfrauds want £14 to mix up a 300ml can! ****** that.

Looking back through old pics, it's funny how things evolve over time!

March 2011: much can change in 4 years!

Yea she's a bit of a monster. 120bhp at 8000rpm, weighs 575kg :)

Got my sticky tyres, and sorted out some orange paint to do them justice :)

Brake lines and ds3000 pads should arrive tomorrow from bill :)

Ah right cool, will have to see if anyone else wants to come. You heading from Plymouth or blazingstoke? Just because we could rendezvous if Plymouth.

My god I'm looking forward to seeing how well slicks handle...

Nice mine dude. A guy used to come out with us on a sunday evening which had a 260bhp type r lump in the back of a mini. It was immense.

Do you have a build thread for the Mini anywhere Prawn? I'd be very interested to see that... my type of car!

[pedant]"My other car is a MINI!" should be "...Mini!" - all capitals is the BMW MINI![/pedant]

No worries man :)

The mini is a brilliant bit of kit, and really quite quick for what it is, but after taking it to the ring twice, it became pretty apparent it wasn't best suited out there, and my obsession with the ring wasn't about to go away.

Both times we took the Mini out, my Dad came along in the A3 as it's more comfy. Both times (with both a3's) we found that the A3 daily, when taken out for a cheeky lap, was quicker than the Mini, due to the very high speeds involved!

32mm neuspeed race rear ARB fitted :)

And the front brakes are finally on, no thanks to an ebay scammer who turned out to be an audisport member!

DS3000 pads feel REALLY bitey, even from an initial test around the block.

Enormous thanks to Bill for getting the pads and braided hoses to me so fast. I have no idea how you did it seeing as you didn't even have them in stock on Monday. Most places seem to take forever. Top service from Bill as always :)

Just need to empty out the mountain of crap in the back now and go test it for real!

be sure to take a test drive over towards me! :)
The seats are now in mine! very pleased with the results!!

I'll be honest Dave, I'm not entirely sure. You'd have to ask Bill about that.

All I know is, I liked my DS2500's in the 312's, and Sportstractors DS3000's in 312's are incredible. So in brembos, they must be simply epic.

Bill runs them in the badger wagon, so they must be top stuff. Reasonably priced too.

Disc life isn't a worry for me, but I can understand it would be for a road car

Considering the pads cost more than the discs, it's not the end of the world. They do wear faster but not massively. Iv had them for around 12 months and done maybe 5k, and have no lip yet.

My ones feels like you face is getting pulled off, and everyone comments how effective they are, so I can't even comprehend how good prawns will be with huge discs and much lighter car.

Oh god. seriously, holy ****.

My face is actually hurting, as are my shoulders from the Harnesses.

These brakes, are simply, insane. Just mental, beyond belief.

Emptied all the tools out of the car tonight, and took it for it's first proper test run.

Still on the TT wheels with ancient rock hard michelins, and oh my god, it's incredible.

The grip is like nothing I've ever been in before. The quaife LSD is simply stunning, grip out of corners defies logic and genuinely hurts my face. The huge rear ARB means I wouldn't look out of place entering the essex drift championships either, set on medium at the moment, and the lift off oversteer is incredible, so controllable, but you can hold a proper slide on the throttle, Top gear test track review style! Yet if you hold your foot in, it simply pulls around the bends in an unholy fashion.

I'm genuinely shocked at just how good it feels, it's like a whole new car all over again. No more wheel spin with the diff, and simply astonishing grip. I can't imagine how it'll be with decent tyres!

Happy, happy prawn.

Cheers folks :) The platinum LCR above previously did 09:15 on road tyres, then did an 08:36 on the Pzero Corsas I've now bought.
I did 08:58 in the grey car on road tyres, with far less mods, so with the black one, on the Pzero corsas, who knows!

Got the splitter fitted this evening. Really chuffed with how it looks

Before:

Many people just screw then on with self tappers, but that wasn't for me, So I used M5 20mm bolts and nylocks, 10 in total:

Should I paint the splitter orange? I can't decide.

Took it for a little blast after fitting the splitter, and gave it a clean too :)

paint it orange will look nice. The mini looks sweeeet

I think the front grill edge in orange will look nice as well. like a gti mk5!

Cheers people, I think it's a tough job getting the orange level just right! I've got mixed opinions on my sunstrip at the moment, will post pics once fitted.

I'd love something like 'you know when you've been tango'd!' sticker on the bootlid, but I fear it'd be a bit over the top!

had a quick spin last night again, The used discs I was given sadly arn't up to much, and I've got a fair bit of vibration under braking. I was only given them as a stop gap, but hoped they'd be ok. clearly not!

Just ordered some eliptically grooved 323x28 discs from badger5, should be here thursday.

Great thread Prawn.

Sticking with the cheesy sticker theme, what about a 'The future's bright, the futures orange' sticker. Maybe OTT, but it is a track car!
