Spring Compressors for coilovers

I need to change the front top mounts on my car.

Can anyone tell me if I'll need spring compressors or can I get away with winding the coils right down before I remove the nut without loosing an eye?

I'm running H&R coilovers and I can't remember whether I used spring compressors to fit them.

I've never needed them when I've stripped the front struts down on any of my A3's. By the time the nut comes off, the compression has been lost.

Run the height adjusting nut down than take the top mount off just remember to measure the nut from the bottom of the shock first.
