Morning people.

I need to get new brakes soon front and rear. I wanted BD grooved discs and Ferodo DS2500 pads. I'm having a change of heart with this setup because everything including braided brake lines is coming in at nearly £600. I don't have £600 for brakes after the incident with my car which left me with a huuuuge bill!

So now i'm asking what's the next setup a step down from BD discs and Ferodo pads which will work out cheaper? Obviously they still need to be damn good though and would still like grooved discs. I do the usual everyday driving with a little blast here and there.

Thanks!

Jay

Ferodo pads with std discs.... I ran DS2500's on my std setup before going over to the AP's....

Get yourself a half decent set of replacement discs if you need to for less than £100 but sadly the DS2500's are still gonna be the main expenditure...

You can get away without braided hoses, they don't feel that much different tbh and you would better off spending money on decent fluid such as Motul RBF660...

If you don't need to replace the discs due to wear then save the money for now and just get pads and fluid...

1. Why do you need braided brake lines?
2. Are you taking your cherished S3 onto a track?
3. Have you considered OEM disks with standard pad + motul fluid?

Plain discs
Plain discs are the best choice for 99.9% of applications

Name brand vs non-name discs
Why pay double the money for a Brembo discs vs. GSF cheapo's? You guessed it there is pretty much no benefit. Its all the same stuff, Spend you money on brake pads

If you want to improve your braking power on a budget, try using a Performance brand of Brake fluid and bleed your brakes. it makes alot of difference!

If you really want to splash the cash then just buy oem disks + ferodo pads + motul brake fluid

I'd go for Black diamond groved on the front with DS2500 pads still but on the rear stick to stock pads and disks from Euro Car Parts. Rear Pagid discs are about £70 a pair, pads (ATE) £23 Black diamond discs and DS250 pads for the front can be had for around £300 a set, add decent fluid and your looking at around £400'ish total. Brake hoses can always be added at a later date assuming the stock ones are not knackered, That's a saving of around £200 (33%) the rear brake downgrade from Black diamond/DS2500 won't make a significant reduction in brake performance but does save a chunk of dosh. Hope this helps.

i agree with tufty and finesse, the discs are much of a muchness, in most cases people buy them because everyone else does.

plain discs, pads of your choice, a decent fluid (how much is the fancy motul stuff? unless its reasonably priced, i expect its massively overkill for 99% of us on here)

brake lines... you do realise your oe ones will be a metal braided line with a rubber jacket? unless theyre failing are you just replacing those becuase everyone else does?

then plain discs on the back with ATE or pagid pads from ECP and youre done

Thanks for the info people.

Well my brakes are absolute crap and my rear brake discs are blatently knackered. I'd rather do a overhaul and freshen it all up again as i found a couple of problems when i bought the car which i've now sorted.

I'll stick with the pads that's cool. I've thought about changing the discs too instead of BD which you guys have just helped me answer. I'll have a look into cheaper discs then with DS2500 pads.

Cheers :)

I've just had my brakes done and I can tell you now that the braded hoses wont make a difference.

I put the following on the rear which are sooooo cheap:

DISCS

PADS

Then went with DS2500 on the front (£150) and Brembo max discs (£135) but as said you can get away with bog standard discs. I also had Motul RBF600 fluid put in but I wanted a reasonable setup as I'm heading to the Nurburgring in 2 weeks and the brakes were a major problem last year. If you dont intend on tracking your car then the above recomendations are fine for the road.

front pagid discs would be about £80 or so for the pair

Thanks Westle i'll have a look into that. I'm speaking with someone about Brembo's which i might get my hands on so i'll see how it goes!

The Brembo set up i'm looking at was going to go onto an Audi S3 but the guy never had time to do it. The Brembo's came off a non VAG car which came as standard with these. The disc size is 323mm, is this correct for my car? It comes with, brand new discs, pads, adaptor, braided hoses, bolts and calipers.

Is it worth £500?

That thread made me realise that the discs dont matter too much but its the pads and fluid that really transform the braking.

You need to ask yourself what type of driving you'll be doing and work out what you'll need. For me, the standard cheapo disc and pads were absolutely fine for road use but they were shocking on the track. If I didn't take it on the track I would have just got the fluid changed to Motul and put standard discs and pads all round.

There are a lot of people who go massively overkill on their brakes because they've read something on a forum and then just bought the same.

I have some partworn ds3000 pads which cost a fair bit and have incredible grip if you dont mind squeeky pads. Shouldnt be a problem using part worns providing you bed them in correctly.

Yeah i understand what you guys are saying and it'd save me a bit of money too!

If i bought these Brembo's, what would be the advantages?

I fitted mintex all round about £90 front £70 rear, pads & discs fit em yourself no problem ! I found reduced dust & slight improvement over oem stuff. Depends what your looking for.

significantly lighter wallet so better power to weight ratio... but then the increased unsprung weight would counter that

plus replacement discs and pads are a pain to arrange and cost the earth

Where would you find discs and pads for it then? Under what car application would you have to chose from?

yeah, just a pain to get hold of so youre over a barrel with regard to cost... which you have to ask whether its worth it in terms of performance.

you have to go to specialists so youre unlikely to get things in a hurry etc

price some up and see what you come back with

Goodness me, never thought brakes would be so confusing! lol.

The guy i'm looking to get the Brembo set up from, he said the discs which are with it are standard LCR 323mm discs and pads? But he stated before the setup has come from an Alfa GTV? So does that mean i can just use LCR 323mm discs? If so, i'm taking them!

He said 'the discs are LCR ones and the pads are similar to alot of things, Alfa and Lambo's amongst a few.'

So Mr Westle, if i buy the setup and it comes to buying new discs and pads, all i need is 323mm LCR ones? How about the pads? Can i go for the LCR pad applications?

Right okay, i've sorted everything out! It's easier than i thought lol. I can go for any 323mm disc applications such as standard LCR's and pretty much any brake pads for Brembo calipers as they're all the same. Looks like i'll be getting Brembo's soon woo hoo! :)
