Yes I know it's an A3 forum, but the bits underneath are the same!

There's rumour of a replacement for the R32 in the shape of an R42, complete with a 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cyliner engine. Nice!!

So why can't the S3 wingmirrors be as stylish as those??
Mahoooosive door handles though!
And is it me, or does it look like touran from the back?

2.5 litre 5 cylinder turbo is getting mentioned more and more.... If they are contemplating it in the golf, they must be doing an RS3 first..... would make sense from a VAG product launch perspective (I know, I know, broken record, but if I will it hard enough Audi will make the RS3 right???)

Love it.
looks the ********.

Great to see theyve kept the MONZA II wheels too.
Best looking OEM wheels ever IMO.

The new Golfs biggest problem will be the Scirroco.

I think that's a reflection making the bit underneath look really deep.

I hope so...

Urrm looks like a Golf 5 GTI to me, I mean come on they could have come up with something different, its not that far of current one, interior is ***** aswell, same boring style, I used to be a golf fanatic but it got boring after mk3 when I had VR6's, dont get me wrong I do like it but from a 5 to new 6 should be more distinctive & change the interior so its more inviting, thats why I bought an A3 over a Golf, external looks good on golf but interior no way anywhere near Audi.

Some comment to the quotes from the TG article:

"We had high hopes for VW's new Golf GTI. Then we saw pictures of it last week. And then we saw it here in Paris.
Hardly world-shattering is it? "

No Golf ever has been, why the surprise ??

"It's the antithesis to Vauxhall's Astra VXR and Ford's Focus ST. It's the quiet one. The one that doesn't make a fuss, but gets on with the job."

No **** sherlock. That always been the Golfs remit.
In fact one of VWs catchprases is `the power of understatement...blah.."
You would ever want a Golf Gti to look like VXR, would you?

"It's a quiet upgrade in the power department, too. The two-litre turbo engine is now putting out 207bhp and 206lb ft of torque, good for a 0-60 time of 7.2 seconds and a top speed of 149mph. Lively enough, but is it going to look a bit slow against the hot hatch in a few years' time?"

Totally agree with this bit.
Punting out a 20K hot hatch with 207bhp these days is arrogant and infuriating. Are VW in bed with the remap companies I ask ?

"How does a GTi 'Plus' grab you? 270bhp or so, along with all-wheel drive?

Yes please. Needs to be notably cheaper than the S3 though.

Soap box back in the cupboard.

Glad I'm not alone, they arent exactly breaking the Golf mould are they with the 6, what a waste of time TBH, even the new scirocco is kinda boring, it has nice looks wide stance but no 4wd, interior is golf 5/6 I mean WTF, boring boring fecking boring

I'd have considerd buying the scirocco if it was 4wd & nice interior but its just shocking they didnt make it distinctively different from the golf inside.

I think it looks great. Updates it enough to keep it fresh but still quite discrete.

Not so sure that the Scirroco is its biggest problem... its from the same stable... do you want it in coupe form or hatch form sir..?

I'd be interested in the 2.5l 5 cyl. I do miss the growl from my R32 but given the choice between a possible RS3 & R42... i would go for the RS3.

A bit too similar for my liking, first thought would definitely to get rid of the old looking alloys - the ones on the rocco would look a lot fresher for the facelift.

is it me or are all the hot hatches getting slower BIGGER engines.
"The two-litre turbo engine is now putting out 207bhp and 206lb ft of torque, good for a 0-60 time of 7.2 seconds "
whats that all about?
i had a new S3 in 2000 which at the time seemed to be ahead of the game which was only an 18T and it seems that since then MOST things got bigger lumps with a very unimpressive bhp.
am i alone?

Don't like it...At all. The current shape looks better to me. Nothing new, interesting or inspiring whatsoever on show and i just don't feel any desire to drive one.

Seems like another arrogant, underambitious VAG product!

isn't part of the problem with the design that they've had to use the MkV subframe for the MkVI in order to reduce costs? One would assume this has had some influence on the design.

The result being more of a MkV 2.0 than a MkVI.

In other words its a cop out & them thinking we're that stupid we wont notice its actually a golf 5 in disguise, lol

Evolution not revolution. I mean, it even has the SAME wheels as the current car... Was the wheel department uninterested in the project too?

Needs more oomph. Although, the VAG marketing machine is all geared up to deliver that it seems. Why build and market just one fast Golf, when you can do 3?

Quite like it though.

See I see this argument completly differently, I want a golf to look like a golf always have done with an evolution. I Don't want a megane style new rear end to revolutionise things because they go out of date very quickly. For example you can still look at the mk3 golf and think its not too out of place with modern cars but have you noticed how dated the new civic is after its novelty wore off?

The biggest tribute to this has to be the Porsche 911 I dont want them to bring something out that looks different they have a timeless car shape even the fist of the 911 breed are great, people still turn their heads even now.

People loved the mk5 GTi even though you could get lots more powerful cars, they are offering a blend of practicality and faster than the average bear car.

Its not even quite the same as the mk5 the exotic multilink rear suspension has been changed, its still multilink but there is less aluminium just because of cost. In a time of fair old un-certainty I think its good to get a golf you can rely on.

Just my 2p's worth
Peace out

Some really good points here and a 2p`s worth well made.

Its unlikely to appeal to those looking for `radical` and probably wont tempt the Megane/Ford/VXR fans anyway.

Im a biased Golf fan, had the Mk3, Mk4, Mk5, and from what Ive seen would certainly consider this Mk6 on the basis that the Mk5 still looks quite fresh for its age. I interpret the Mk6 more of a warmed over Mk5 which isnt a bad thing IMO.
Just like the the facelift S3 which is essentially a warmed over 1st gen 8P S3 and fantastic for it btw.
If its not broke then dont fix it. (although my MK5 needed fixed quite a lot!)

What I dont like one little bit is the notion of a 207bhp version WTF!.
It dilutes the Gti marque and is a very conceited gesture from VW if its released.***, the ED30 has 237bhp !!

If you are going to do a diluted version then make it a diesel and at least it will have mpg and torque as a trump card. At least then it tops the current performance Golf/A3/Megane range and makes more sense.

VW should go for more bhp and clever traction systems, chassis designs and diffs then top the range with a 4wd barnstormer.

Back to my point about about the rocco being the MK6`s biggest problem, Ok, the 5dr will be the choice for those looking for the extra doors and potential to seat 5 on a more regular basis, however having owned lots of 3dr Golfs and Corrados in the past I would choose the the rocco over the 3dr GTi anyday, assuming like for like price/spec.

cheers
Paul

So no mention of an R36 then?

207bhp in a lighter car would be great. I kind of hope manufacturers start to concentrate on weight saving rather than ever climbing peak bhp figures!

I quite like the look of it, a lot more than the standard Golf 6 I've seen pictures of. It beats the Scirocco for me. I drive past one everyday at the VW dealer and it looks nothing special at all... the concept was another matter!

As with the MkV the 5-door looks better than the 3-door. IMO.

Not coming up with a new design for the wheels is a bit of a cop-out too. Then again I've never been a fan of Monza's.

So when is the new A3 based on this MkVI gonna be out?

I think they could of put some new wheels on the car, aslo not keen on the rear lights, but rest seems nice, I like the mk4 r32 style exhaust too

I think the mk4 golf was the really low point it had an amazing dash but that was about it the bora 130 I had with viper kit kept up with the 180 bhp GTi's, they really were diluted because of the weight and shocking handling. I think real world the GT TDi's will be more than a match for the GTi. A lot is said about real world and I dont think of real world as that I can never use the pace cos when on my bike I do regularly. What I think it means is that on a decent run you wont have to stop for fuel, you'll probably have lower service costs and in gear it will probably be faster just not off the start.

It reaks of the new Type-R tho the mk6 being of similar output to a previous generation car. But do they want a golf which will perform like an s3? Think of the cayman it lacks a lsd which would make it faster than the 911 which would hurt their sales. Sie germans are very stict in how product lines dont cross over and it nets them a small fortune.

I think 220 BHP would have been a good compromise on the mk6. Has anyone driven a new rocco?

No offence Wob but it's been well publicised for around 18 months that the MKVI is just a facelift with a few suspension tweaks and a cut back on building costs. I'm amased some people still find this a surprise. Even VW in their press releases state it's not an all new car.

Just a quote from golfgti.co.uk

Everyone says its basically a Golf Mk5.5 :whistle2:

Im guna wait for the KO4 editions to roll out of the factory before passing judgement, all good seeing a picture but cant really make up my mind until I see it up close. I've got a tenner on seeing a different set of wheels on release aswel.

I read an article in Auto Express in 2006 where the head of VW was saying that the sixth generation golf was being brought forward two years to reduce costs and would be built on the mkv chassis. The same article said that the mkvii chassis would provide the underpinnings for the mk3 A3.

It also talked about the mkv's suspension being very expensive to produce and that it would be replaced by a cheaper version.

I've not been able to find the full article, but here is the gist of it:

Sixth Generation Golf to Enter Market in 2008

FRANKFURT (AFX) - Volkswagen AG's new version of its Golf model will enter the market in 2008, a year earlier than the automaker had originally planned, chairman of the Volkswagen Brand Wolfgang Bernhard told Der Spiegel magazine.

The current model is burdened by high production costs, with each car taking 48 hours to be manufactured on the assembly line. Door construction alone costs about 300 eur in needless reworking. A new model will take both less time and money to produce, Bernhard told the magazine.

Rival car companies are able to produce comparable models in half the time, reported Spiegel.

found it.....

Volkswagen’s new Golf—scheduled for introduction later this year in the North Ameri-can market—is headed for one of the shortest product lifecycles in history if VW boss Wolfgang Bernhard gets his way. Word out of Germany is Bernhard plans to chop two years off the existing model’s lifecycle in an effort to improve production efficiency and add profitability to a car that is considered crucial to the carmaker’s financial future.

Conceived to remain in production beyond the end of the decade, today’s fifth-generation Golf is now scheduled for replacement during the third quarter of 2008, meaning it will have been on sale here for about two years before a cheaper-to-build sixth-generation model is unveiled in Europe. The fifth-gen Golf has been on sale in Europe since 2003, but the first version of the car didn’t arrive in the United States until the Golf-based 2006 GTI went on sale in February (“Top of the Line,” Jan. 9).

First introduced in 1974, the Golf has traditionally operated on at least a seven-year model cycle. However, the inherent sophistication of the latest model coupled with excessive build times at VW’s heavily unionized Wolfs-burg plants in Germany has made the Golf “horrendously expensive to produce,” according to one high-ranking Wolfsburg source. Currency imbalances further diminish Golf’s profitability in the United States.

VW wants to pull the introduction of the new model forward, streamline production operations and diversify the Golf lineup to include a new coupe and a compact off-roader based on the Concept A revealed at Geneva. All this is intended to help VW retain Golf’s position at the top of the European sales charts, while chasing a 10-percent gain in productivity over the next four years.

Under Bernhard’s watch, VW plans to make the next Golf more visually attractive yet significantly cheaper to produce. “For the production of the Golf in Wolfsburg we require two-and-a-half times the number of hours required by the best of the competition,” says Bernhard, who joined VW after making a name for himself at Chrysler in the United States, where he is credited with huge advances in production efficiency.

Information obtained by AutoWeek indicates the sixth-generation Golf will ride on a lightly modified version of today’s platform, including its multilink rear suspension. The car will get new sheetmetal, run advanced direct-injection engines and will offer advanced features such as navigation and a USB-compatible audio system.

With sales of the traditional Golf hatchbacks on the wane, Bernhard is reportedly studying a proposal to create distinct versions of the three- and five-door models. Three-door Golfs will get a sportier slant—in the process creating a more suitable basis for the next-generation GTI and a successor to the R32—with five-door models filling the traditional people-mover role.

Seriously?

Yes , but for the R model, which is due out in 2010. My name is top on the list, when they release them.

You've got the admit, that even thought the A3/S3 is better quality, the chassis on the golf is miles better, with so much more feedback through the steering, and an R model with a 2.0T, will be great

Front end is a step back, very retro and dont like it.

Where does the R42 come from then if its meant to have a 2.5 engine?

Always thought it would be the R36 with the new 3.6 passatt engine?

Exactly right, there won't be a new R32 or R42, as in today's economic climate, VW have come to the conclusion that big thirsty engines with high TAX groups in hot hatches are not selling like they did a couple of years back.

So they will be releasing a GTI-R, which will have the same running gear as the current S3, with 4-motion and same output from the 2.00 TFSI.

Coincidently Audi dropped the 3.2 A3 from it's range last year, as it had the S3, with better performance and running costs....
