Hi all,

After selling my 1.8T last year, I've somehow ended up with another A3..

But this time it's 1.8 without the T and it's auto :-(

Anyway I have noticed that the rpm stays at about 4000 at 100km/h on

motorways. To me this seems a bit high (my 1.8T used to be about 3200

at 100km/h)

What do you guys think? Would this be normal?or have I just purchased a

lemon?

Thanks heaps

Welcome to the Automatic world mate....Glad to have another one of us on board!

First, I am assuming that your Auto. Box in non-triptonic? If it is standard the gearbox is made by renualt and for lack of a better word it is crap...(i.e. clunky and shifts far too quick through the gears).

Second, 4000 rpm is way too high. I am usually just over 3000 at 70mph. It sounds non-mechanical to me, however, best hook up to a vagcom mate to be sure. I will check my exact RPM at Lunchtime today.

Third, sadly there is no chance of a remap, but I am very interested to compare notes on this, and any current/future problems.

Best, Clach

Thanks for that Clach,
Yeah it's a non-tiptronic standard gearbox.. and yes, I too think it's crap..
I'll be taking it to the local garage tommorow to see what the problem is. Just went out for a quick drive to recheck and now I can't switch the ****** foglamp off..
My wife is going to be ****** off when she finds out about this!!
:slapped:

Pull the fuse out...!?

I will be in contact after lunch mate, how many miles has it done. Mine is sitting at 55K and I am thinking about getting an Oil change at 60k it is that lumpy?

Speak soon,

Clach

This cars giving me all sorts of problems..!!!

Just bought a new switch unit on ebay as a result.

Mines done just over 80k now and probably due for a timing belt soon.

Looking forward to your rpm readings..

Cheers,
Steve

Try pulling out the light switch (clockwise, and pull out), the connection for the foglight may have come loose....

Ok, mate here goes.

When I first set off the tranny change from 1st to second is harsh...

When the car is warmed up the gear changes are as follows: (or there or there about)

1st 15 at 2500rpm
2nd 25 at 2500rpm
3rd 35 at 2500rpm

This is with medium pressure on the accelerator from traffic lights.

On the motorway, 60mph - 2600 and 70mph - 3200rpm

Hope this helps mate...

Went to the local mechanic today and did the computer check:

4th gear solenoid has problems and the mechanic suggested gear box replacement!!

Can't I just replace the solenoid??? It's going to cost lots of $$$$ :-(

I would think so, but this is territory I am not familiar with. I would suggest taking the car to a automatic gearbox specialist..Ask around for a reputable garage. Sadly, Gearbox problems are never cheap...Soz mate

Keep me updated mate, and how much did they say a new Gearbox woudl amount to...

I can't see anything on e-bay either mate.....best to try breakers and get someone to fit it....
