Afternoon all,

Only had my Audi A3 a couple of weeks but have noticed over the weekend when parked (engine running) that idling sounded a little rough.

My Mrs is driving the vehicle today and has experienced the same but now says the car is shaking and is jerking. She has recorded a video and shared with me so uploaded to the tube.

Excusing her running commentary, this doesnt appear to be good. Any suggestions? I am based in West London (Hillingdon) so recommendations for a good specialist/mechanic would be handy.

Audi is a 2010 1.4TSFI S tronic gearbox. Currently covered 67k miles.

get a video of the actual engine and the sounds it makes could be a number of things whats the mileage of the car

Thanks for responding. Almost finished work for the day so will get video done on this.

Current mileage is 66k

I have the same model 1.4 turbo 2010 s line there are loads of videos on YouTube about the shaky engine it mostly leads to the timing chain common fault apparently on these mine was alittle shaky but after a set of ngk plugs and a good service you cannot even hear it I will eventually change the chain as its done 93 thousand miles

Looking and listening to car now (hood up) I can't hear anything so looks like an intermittent problem. Ideally I would like to hear and record the sound so at least I can show mechanic to help diagnose

Morning all

On previous recording, startup engine was shakey with a little erratic idling. Has gotten progressively worst over the weekend. My Mrs this morning on school run started the car and immediately engine sounding rough and shakey and then stalled.

She did start the car again after a few mins but literally repeated the same problem which she recorded. Also to add the engine management light has now come on.

On weekend I did pop into a garage round my way (Solo Automotive, Hayes) and the lead mechanic Ash had a brief look. Frustratingly the car didn't want to perform its stage act so have booked it in for Weds to have a proper look.

Any ideas on what it could be?

I reckon the tensioner is losing pressure some times

It's at the garage. Had it recovered earlier at lunchtime. The wide mentioned the breakdown mechanic did have a brief look and checked spark plugs and fortunately didn't see any oil in them. He did assume either turbo is going but thought more on the side of pressure/air leaking from somewhere as the car struggles when trying to idle upon startup.

Do I dare ask what is the damage on the timing chain

timing chain not to bad but if its slipped and hit the valves then head off see how many valves and chain kit a few quid from the video you posted it did not sound like air leaks it sounded like the chain killed itself

normaly the code is 0016 camshaft bank 1 correlation and crank shaft out of time when the chain is slack

I believe the only way to check the timing chain stretch is to remove the cover and measure it. You may be able to check with a computer, but I'm not sure if that's possible with your engine.

There is no way to check if the tensioner failed. Best insurance is to just have it replaced if it's the old style.

Thanks for sharing this. I think post garage fix I will be investing in a diagnostic tool for basic reading of faults

Hoping there is a diagnosis tomorrow on the issue from garage so I can compare notes. Thanks for sharing info on this ronniejack :thumbs up:

Just got off phone with mechanic.

He has ran a compression test. Thinks the timing chain is OK.

Diagnostic tool pointed to misfiring.

Says my oil has contaminated with petrol so will need new oil replacing. Checked spark plugs and they are corroded (breakdown mechanic also confirmed this upon checking) so need 4 new plugs (cost £72 for them). Also has checked my coils. 2 of them are Audi, while the other 2 are non branded. Says its better for me to change all 4 foils in the long run (£128 for 4x Bosch).

Ironically car was booked in for a scheduled service tomorrow (called last week) with this mechanic (Solo Automotive) before the engine stuff advanced quicker than it should be. Looking at service book spark plugs haven't been changed since Nov 2015 (full service was carried out by Audi back then).

Would like to hear you guys thoughts on this please? Anything sound familiar? Also the costs for the spark plugs and coils sound reasonable or not?

spark plugs are very expensive where I am motor parts direct sell ngk platinum x4 28 pounds

compression test will not confirm the chain is ok it just confirms everything turns over and makes compression he needs to look at the chain and check it
