Hi all,

Pano roof motor just stripped this cog:

Roof is currently in vent mode and dont want to force it to close.

Guessing it's a whole new motor as well, oh joy!!

Question I'd ask 1st is, why did it strip as never seen that on a pan roof, so fitting a new would maybe happen again.

Pretty sure it touched one of the plastic straps from my roof rack and then the roof wasn't quite square, didn't take much at all to break it.

Have found the other half of it, has 19 teeth and it looks like I might be able to get one from China for under £10 but doesn't get the roof to close for now as still stuck in the vent position.

In the past, VW Group and others, provided a means to manually drive these electric powered sunroofs shut, normally it involves depressing/disengaging the motor drive and getting direct connection to the drive mechanism and using a Torx or Allen key to wind the mechanism shut - usually accessible easily by removing a small cover/panel, ie no major strip down needed.

That process is when the motor fails and you can still turn the cog manually to shut the roof.

New motor from Audi is £406!!

So is there a Torx/Allen key recessed point in the mechanism side gear wheel that you can turn, there should be - unless VW Group have turned into being dumbheads? Normally the driven or mechanism side gear wheel is on a sprung axle so that when you press up on it it disengages and allows you to close an open window when the motor or its supply fails.

Nothing I can see, going to drop the roof lining, don't see I have a choice, cannot weatherproof the car at the moment.

Allen key to do the job should be attached to the driver side plastic trim that pops off the end of the dashboard to reveal the fuses.
Then you should be able to drop the central light unit at the front to reveal the bolt to wind round i believe? But you’re saying that won’t work either?

Is it a panaramic roof?

Nope it wont work as that process is reliant on that cog being in place. I could turn the allen key but the other end will spin with no effect.

Yes, pano roof.

Managed to put together a tool to manually close it in the end, taken a long time though, but water tight for now.

Looks quite similar to this one on Fleabay.

If you look at the gear it appears to have manufactured weak points in it. The lines on the gear face would act as stress raisers and that is where it would fail if over loaded. Or is it how the gear is attached to the shaft.
You may be able to find a cheap replacement on Fleabay.
*** are very good for OE parts. https://www.facebook.com/RPSPECIALISTS/

Yes, looks very similar with the 19 teeth.

I think it is designed to split under stress, need to do more research but at least I can take the kids away for a few days to our house in Littlehampton, that's all I care about for now!

Reeeeeesult!

Good old Fords needing spares saved the day.

To be honest I ordered 2 gear wheels from 3 different places, said they were for Ford, Mercedes and BMW, all were exactly the same!! Decided to swap the pano roof motor with the sun blind motor at the same time as they're the same part so that the genuine part does all of the hard work.
