Gearbox issues

My car has always been on the notchy side since I bought it, 3rd gear seemed to grind at times when flooring it into high revs but then I didn't really notice it.

I've recently had a Sachs clutch and lightweight flywheel fitted. I also have a short shifter, have changed gearbox oil not too long ago.

I've started to notice there is quite a lot of resistance to go in any gear at high revs. 3rd will grind at high revs too. It's not particularly noticeable lower down the Rev range, just abit notchy but at high revs it really doesn't want to go into gear.

Any ideas? Car has just gone over 117k.

I had exactly the same issues. Assuming you have tried everything else, get ready to get your wallet out.

My box was crunching going to 3rd a lot so did the usual, poly dog bone. New oil. Neither helped. It wasn't until I filled my engine/gearbox mounts with poly resin then problem went away. Gear changing is effortless. Although first gear is still notchy on take off. Always been like that.

Dogbone bush is poly. Sounds like a potential idea Sam, but it's not just crunching going into 3rd, it doesn't want to go into any gear if you're in high revs. It's still notchy low down but high revs is where it doesn't want to go in at all,especially 1,2 and 3. It's over revving during gear changes too, thought it was the clutch switch but dunno if that's related to the issues I'm experiencing.

I've been running 397bhp, 360lb ft, wondering if It was already abit knackered and that's tipped it over the edge.

I had this issue after changing the fluid in my S3 6 speed box (I changed it for the proper VAG spec oil from TPS specified for the gearbox). I then got Nasty crunching noises changing into third and sometimes crunchy going down to first. I was prepared for a new gearbox ... Took it to my specialist and he fixed it by putting VAG ATF fluid in. His gearbox builder said the standard stuff is not good but the ATF is a better match.

+15k since the change of oil to ATF and it's still sweet.
