HI guys,

New to the forum so apologies if it has been diagnosed before/wrong place.

I bought a 59 plate s4 in Feb this year. I've been having an repetitive problem with the auto gearbox. It always seems to happen when leaving a junction/from stationary. Sometimes there's a small bang others nothing. Mechatronics unit was changed by audi 20k miles ago, they've also confirmed that if this is the problem they shall replace free of charge.

Ive attached the warning symbol from dash info. It says initially along the lines of 'reverse gear cannot be selected but safe to drive' and goes into limp mode (2000rpm and shifts up 2 gears at a time). By stopping the car it resets itself but id rather have it seen to. For all the world its as if it is trying to select reverse gear while shifting from 1st to 2nd.

My worry is that my warranty will be void as the dealer I bought it from has changed the supercharger pulley from factory to a smaller Forge pulley also he has remapped the engine and gearbox with Stadt tecnik software. He assures me from being a Audi technician for 10years that he has bypassed something so it is undetectable but im a bit sceptical!!

Any info would be great guys and thank you in advance.

No I bought it from a company called Autohaus in manchester who specialise in this. They remap their stock cars and do various cosmetic mods and sell them on again.
Sorry I shouldn't have said dealer!

yeah I would do that but I live 500miles away and an 17hr round trip. lol
All really want to know is whether anyone has seen or heard of this before so I can half work out what to do. My nearest recommended tuner by Audi magazine is 120miles away as is nearest Audi dealer and don't really want to book into a dealer if im gonna get a 2.5k bill for my troubles! I've just come across something online which may be the fault, 'DSG emergency program'. It sounds very similar describing the gearbox may not select every forward gear and also reverse is not selectable.:help:

Anyone near you have vag-com to check the error codes?
My first thought is mech unit again.

I'm almost certain nearest VAG garage is 120mls away, which brings me to my next problem, if it happens they want it transported to Audi garage to diagnose. I've had a few suggestions of changing gearbox oil as a first port of call?

I throw my 2peneth in for info. The software will not be hidden from Audi if they inspect the car, there are multiple points and references that can be compared with orginal software/code, the most basic being a file checksum which cannot be recreated. Its not an issue just want to make sure you knew the truth.

You could try it, but I think you would be wasting your time.

Out of interest what is the going rate to get hooked up to diagnostics at Audi? Am I correct in saying even a diagnostics check can put a black mark against the car for software changes for future problems?

Thanks for your replies guys, looks like I'm at a loss here and possibly seriously out of pocket.

No point in transporting it unless you're leaving the ignition on. If like mine, when you turn it off and on the error disappears from the DIS, however it will be stored in the memory which they can scan with VCDS.
So although the issue doesn't have to be there they can still register it.
They may try to make you do software update and oil change, but given it was only 20k ago it should have the latest software on it already and your oil should be good.
Find someone close to you with a VCDS, get the full codes and send it to them, mentioning the above. Then ask for a replacement under Audi parts warranty if it was done within 2 years.
Then fingers crossed they don't check for the remap....that's the route i'd go for. Worth a try, and really hope that's all it is.

A simple diagnostics scan won't pick the remap up ;)

If they want to hunt for it they can probably find it, but a normal diag won't flag anything

Since you're so far from them, try to blag a free diagnosis, especially if they already think it's a mech unit replacement, as they'll get the money back from Audi for the unit and work, so quids in for them, as probably at least a grands worth of Audi labour to change it

My first diagnosis I got when I booked it in for a free health check and asked if they could check an error I saw whilst doing it (they asked if I had anything concerning me that I wanted them to look at whilst doing it)

Had the car plugged in VCDS today reading fault code 9711 - sensor for gear actuator 1
Any one give me any info on this?
