Dear all,
Many thanks for all your guidance on this thread. I recently had the same oil consumption issue with my 2010 Audi A4 1.8 tfsi
My car was out of warranty and had done around 130k at the time of the first oil consumption test. It had a full Audi main dealer service history until I bought it and then I used an independent service centre from then on. The independent service centre did not put the oil grade on every invoice so I simply visited them and asked them to write a note on their headed paper that they had used the correct long-life grade oil for all my services. Audi accepted this without any issues and gave me free oil consumption tests, a free engine rebuild (usual pistons, rings and con rods) and a loan car during the work. The car now drives like new and the oil level has not dropped in over 4k. I also asked them to replace the water pump while the engine was out as I had a small leak somewhere and the pump was the most likely cause. I paid for the pump but labour was free and the coolant level hasn't dropped since.
Audi seem to be helping customers more now - they were reluctant when the issue first emerged. I think this problem combined with the VAG group emissions scandal has made them think they if they want customers in the future - they need to fix the oil consumption issues on this problematic engine range. Clearly I feel they should have done a recall for this issue in the first place but we are where we are.
Without the advice I found in this and other forums, I wouldn't have known what to do / how to approach Audi. If you have this issue, my advice would be to book your car in for the consumption test ASAP and create a folder with all your service history, receipts etc. Explain that you'd heard about the case in the USA and that you're a loyal Audi customer etc. If you're missing any proof of the oil grade used in your services - ask the garage for written confirmation and give this to Audi. Audi are not demanding a full Audi dealer history but are seeking proof that the car has been serviced correctly.
Finally, remember to be polite during the process and you will hopefully be pleasantly surprised by the Audi customer service as I was.
My faith in Audi has been restored and I hope they continue to fix this issue for others.
