Is it possible to get insurance sorted off the VIN or did I dream that I read this some where?

Yes it is, I did this on a car of mine. You just need to let the insurance company know the reg ASAP.

You may be able to get the insurance sorted based on the car details with the actual registration number to be confirmed when you take delivery.

My Greencard Europe insurance is VIN based, doesnt have reg number on it.....

I needed to have mine done in this way on my new A3. Admiral would initially only do it if it was an import, although this was not the case for me. They did relent and I was given a 14 day cover note. If I failed to provide the reg details within that time, then my insurance would cease.
