I'd like to upgrade my steering wheel to the multi-function type but as I have a non-stock stereo what benefits will this add?

what stereo do you have? i have the MFSW on my car with the new Pioneer units which gives me the volume up and down plus tracks previous and next along with mode button that goes through the sources on my stereo but i have heard that the new steering controller boxes no longer do the mode.
