If there are smalls coming from the air con that means ther's probably all sorts of bacteria in there, so you need to use one of the proper air con fresheners - and follow the instructions to the letter.

Have you looked at the pollen filter? Apparently these can cause strange smells if left unchanged for a long period of time.
