Hello there,is it possible to lubricate the ball joint/bearing race at the top of the mcphearson strut, mine on my a4 is making a lovely grinding/knocking noise,i have replaced the top two radius arm ball joint and i am reasonably sure that the noise is from higher up and not the two bottom ball joints and is the thermostat housing in the same place as the coolent drain? aaahh the joys of motoring!!

There is no bearing at the top of the shock. The car doesnt have macpherson struts, it has multilink suspension, and as a result the shock doesnt twist with the steering.

If its creaking its one of the arms you havent changed.

Thermostat location depends on which engine you have!

Hello Aragorn, thanks for getting in touch, will investigate some more,my a4 has the 1.8 125 bhp 4 cylinder engine.

In that case the stat is on the left hand front corner of the engine, follow the bottom rad hose and it leads right to it, pop the little black elbow off and its right there.

spot on,the stat was just where you described it,many thanks aragorn,if ever you need any help give us a shout.
