Cost to replace oil pick up - sludge prevention!!

Hey guys
Looking to return to the Audi family as my Leon Cupra isn't really big enough, a big reason why i actually changed to Seat was because they did't use long life servicing until much later than Audi.

But I would like an A4 1.8T Avant around a '03 and i'm scared by the dreaded sludge!! i have seen a few members saying they would get the sump cleaned and pick up replaced as a precaution and the get off long life servicing.

I was wondering which independents people have used for this, whether they have had the engine pulled or done insitu, and of course how much it all cost?

i cost me 220 ish To change the pick up pipe, oil and to clean the sump at my local Vag indy for my 1.8t Q

AMD Essex want £350inc vat for new pipe, clean sump, oil+filter.

The replacing the pump would be an addition £190

Anyone in the South East had it done?

I asked a local audi specialist by me and he wants £400 to do the job including the oil pump!

The pick up pipe itself is £16 + vat !!!!! Lol. I'd suggest getting the pump done aswell for piece of mind, and I'm talking from experience !!! It's a fairly big job though. The subframe has to be moved , hence the labour costs.

It's a pain about the subframe being in the way, the lndie who quoted me £350 said it was £175 on an A3! either way my indie seems expensive

I'm going to see one at the weekend, around 100k with LL servcing, are there any checks i can do to tell if it's sludged? or just peer through the oil filler cap and see what it's like, i know my Leon looks super clean inside, but it has been well looked after!

Actually wondering if a 130bhp 1.9tdi might be safer option......

I got mine done at Midland Vw for £200

I test drove mine and it was fine. Drove it back on the motorway and the dreaded oil pressure light started to flash. After getting the oil pick up pipe changed its been fine. I would advise to take it off long life servicing tho when you get it.

There isn't anything wrong with longlife servicing as long as you change the oil yourself halfway through.

It come down to how much they charge for labour, the indy i use is one man and an apprentice (His Bro),
and haggle Like Hell

Mine's in an Audi franchised garage right now having the pump/pickup replaced, sump cleaned and oil lines replaced after the oil light and 3 beeps of death came on a couple of days ago.

I stopped immediately and got it trailered to the garage, so no damage to the engine.

Total cost for the work is £700... Fortunately, I got mine used from a garage, so they're picking up the bill - phew!

Mine has done just over 100k, and has been long life serviced.

The Audi garage told me it's about six hours labour plus the parts and replacement oil and filters , and they are doing the subframe drop approach.

I'd be wary about anybody quoting 'too' cheap, even if it's an independent.

thanks for all the input, sent a email off to midlandvw, although they aren't close to me they are close to the car in question, so hopefully if the car is good i can plan it so that the oil pick up gets done the when or before i collect the car.

The car is from a dealer but they have said it's one they have recevied as a partex, so don't think i'll have any warranty with them, Tooks i guess you had a warranty with your dealer? or just good faith?

Prices is no guarantee of quality, I used you use a well establish indy and they prices was a lot more than am paying now. I lost faith in them went I ask to have a big oil filler to be fitted at a service, when I pick up the car and checked it was the small one, they said it the best for my car, so I lost trust I them. The guy I go to now dose a lot of my mates cars, and he will scan are cars for free, I Wall ways pay cash

Yeah, mine was a part-ex too, although the dealer included a 30 day warranty, although I negotiated it up to 90 days as they wouldn't budge from the asking price.

Pleased I did now!

I got my car from a car dealer 150 miles from my house, he was a bit of a tosser at first when I asked him to pay for the job. But after a few calls, he did agree to cover the cost of the pick up pipe job.

Cheers guys, i'll have to enquire if there would be any warranty. I found a post over at audi-forums by A8 Tech which was also very helpful so i thought i'd link it in as it has good info about checking for sludge when buying a 1.8T.

"vag com reading ok means oil pressure is fine so that's good

check around the inside of the oil filler cap for dirt and feel the breather pipes at the rear of the rocker cover, if they are rock hard then its a sign they are blocked with carbon.

with the engine running remover the filler cap, if it is tight then there is a vacuum in the engine (blockage)

if you replace the oil pump make sure you remove the breather pipes and fully clean them to remove the carbon build up which causes the blockages at the strainer

check for light blue smoke from the exhaust which indicates oil consumption from possible turbo wear brought on by oil pressure drop"

don't suppose either of you know who your warranty was with? was it simple to get them to do the repair work? been told a warranty with carcareplan could be arranged
