Hey

My backing plate has decided to corrode itself and needs coming off as it is making a right racket.

Is this easy enough to do or is it a garage job?

First time I did this was on a Volvo, took me 1,5hour to do myself to replace the disk.

Just try it yourself.

Obviously this depends on your experience/competence, but it requires removing the brake calipers, which I didn't fancy doing myself - never done any work on brakes - so I got them done recently by a local indie Audi garage. Bought them online myself though for about £30 for the pair, including shipping from Germany to UK.

Do they need to be on though?

One chap I spoke to took his off, the bloke who looked at my car yesterday said you can just snap them off.

I appreciate they protect the discs from debris, but is that all?

Of course they need to be fitted, if not stones and grit will find their way in and score the discs and pads. Not to mention the noises you get when driving, put them on, it’s not a hard job to do.

Its a Calliper and disc off job to reveal the fixings. Some people do remove them if they are fitting larger discs but as mentioned above, you can increase the chance of grit lodging above the pads leading to noise and expensive repairs. So if you have to take the disc off to remove them have a replacement ready to install.

Thanks.

To get it off properly, do you just remove the callipers and disc? I saw something written online about the bearings. In fact a garage I rang said it would be complicated as you’d have to probably replace them (assume he was just having me on)

As far as I know, when I had it done recently, they didn't replace the bearings. As I supplied the backing plates myself, I think they only charged for labour.
