8L MFSW Conversion

Hahaha no way, I've been looking for about an hour and didn't spot that.

Appreciate it

Guys..... I can confirm that the Audi S3 8V steering wheel badge fits perfectly without any modification!

Now I’ve got to work out a way to change mine without taking the airbag off (I really can’t be *****) :tearsofjoy:

The black part of that surround will come out without to much trouble... should clear the airbag. give it a whirl.

Yay!... something else to add to the list lmao... gone are the days of paying 30 quid for a mountney lol

In other news.. I have been talking to a guy I know who does leather repairs and other such fun and games.... I am kinda hoping my air bag is black.. I realise this will add to the overall expense but its gotta be right and no different to refurbing the wheel which I would have done to my S3 wheel anyway

<tuffty/>

Airbag finally arrived today... not sure exactly what colour it is tbh... its not 'black' but then not sure its the same grey as the boss either...

Just waiting on the remaining parts including an S3 badge ... hopefully the module is already coded but I think I can sort that if not :)

Interesting.... says “soul” but doesn’t look as black as mine. It a good match to your wheel though thank god! I’m just waiting on getting the two connectors which I’ll try and pick up this week and I’m all set too. I’m in the same boat as you regarding the module, not sure if it’s already coded or not! What’s your thoughts on getting it coded if it isn’t Paul?

From what I understand it will need plugging into a compatible car and recoding...

The leather seems close... not so sure on the boss... last picture does show the boss to be a greyer shade but it is also greyer than the leather...

I still may take a chance on getting a bottle of plastic/vinyl paint... I can try it on the back of the boss first and see if it looks alright and matches ok... it would potentially lessen the mix of colour transitioning from the black cowl to the gloss switch gear trim

@syncro had to do that with his module if I remember rightly, plugged it into a later car and re-coded it. If you've got access to a later car it's fairly straight forward...

Just looked back at your pic..

yours is 8V0 880 201 AL, mine is 8V0 880 201 DE

The AL one is listed in 7zap (online VAG catalogue) but DE isn't

Mine was listed as brand new and while there are no obvious signs of use it didn't exactly come 'boxed' but I am nit picking really

Just waiting on the 2 x plugs to be able to crack on now :)

<tuffty/>

Just had a look into your part number, can’t see any obvious differences. There are plenty of references to it. The AL seems more common from what I’ve seen that’s all.

Did you order the two connectors direct from Audi? I’ve yet to do it.... any mention on a back order, gonna try getting them for this weekend. Going to make a start plus I need to try out that climate control, along with fitting my FIS controller.

Yes direct from Audi... didn't say there was a back order on those but the S3 badge is 7-10 days from germany

...and on the subject of the badge a few more images to hopefully add some value to this thread...

Used a 'spudger' to help prise the badge trim out....

20181029 96dpi IMG 20181029 173902

Then pushed out the black insert from behind...
20181029 96dpi IMG 20181029 174117

Using a pair of needle nose tweezers I got the badge out too... please note that the plastic the badge is made of is pretty rigid and any effort to lever on the back of the badge may result in snapping the 'tangs' off but the plastic ledge the tang clips over is flexible so if pushing the badge from behind isn't making much headway you can assist it by moving the black plastic bit
20181029 96dpi IMG 20181029 174424

I then put the trim back together and refitted to the wheel... only need to push the S3 badge in when it arrives :)
20181029 96dpi IMG 20181029 174637

No need for wheel removal to do this...

Is there a reason no one is using a flat bottom steering wheel ?
Or just personal preference

I’ve had several steering wheels in my last mk2 TT but now have a mk3 so I’ll be fitting this into my sons S3 8l
The wrap all his piano black in high gloss 4d carbon

Combination of personal preference and cost... for less than the price of buying a bare flat bottomed wheel I have sorted everything I need to fit a MFSW...

I personally don't like the flat bottom wheels... in all the cars I have driven with them fitted it felt very odd... I am sure its a thing you could get used to but for me a round wheel not only suits the age of the car (personal preference) but is a substantially cheaper investment making the retro fit worth while

I have the flat bottom and so does warren it’s just preference and if your willing to pay the extra mine cost a small fortune and still have to wire the controls up
Plus some don’t like the flat bottom it can make driving awkward

I’m the same as Tuffty, I was very tempted by the flat bottom but I bought my steering wheel for a quarter of the price! That and like he said a round one suits the car better.

That’s a very nice looking steering wheel, must have cost a fair amount getting it wrapped, etc.

Clean looking S3 too

The wheel isn’t wrapped, it oem from the individual range
Bought it from
German eBay a couple of years ago
I wrapped the satin silver trims in the tt to match

I know what your all saying about the round ones suiting It etc
And I admit the carbon one does look a bit much in there but it’s only sat in the garage
He’s currently got a mk3 tt flat bottom in it and I thing that really suits it well BUT cannot get the functions working as it is a lin3 and won’t talk to the module

I have a mk2 ttrs flatbottom steering wheel with an s3 badge, I wanted this style of wheel as I prefer it and was not happy with a dual stage airbag wired as single or just an empty airbag cover with a resistor so I have a custom single stage airbag made from a blown mk2 tt airbag with a new mk2 tt airbag cover from eBay and used the bag and detonator from inside a 2001 polo 6n2 airbag. I detonated the first one i made in a scrap car fitted with a mk2 tt fbmfsw to make sure it came out through the cover correctly and it did, I have some pictures I screenshotted from a slow motion video of the airbag detonating. I rebuilt it with another new cover and another 20 euro polo bag. I will try to post some pictures soon.

JHey syncro - this post couldn't come at a better time!

I"ve got a MK2 FBSW too with airbag (dual stage)

So am looking forward to seeing your wiring setup... i have some pages referenced on the wiring (have the modules sitting here too) so hopefully can get it installed and working OK

Why the use of the Polo bag/detonator?

The wiring is the same layout as in Warren’s guide, I have pictures of the bag modifications I did a few years ago on an old phone so I need to charge it up and try to retrieve them

For any of the multi function buttons to work do you need to have a sat nav fitted as per the pdf or can this be done without the nav?

As far as I know you need the rnse head unit or the aftermarket one

Did someone mention they have the wiring details for converting a dual stage bag? be rather interested in that

i posted a picture a while ago but i cant remember which thread, i know both ignitors are wired up to to the single stage trigger of the 8l and same applies to the pre facelift 8p trigger thats also single stage

Fixed the image links... quick google search suggested that the .org domain got locked so they reverted to a .cc domain... edited the image links and now all working... I'll grab the images later and attach them to this post along with the translated text...

Doesn't show the airbag mods on that post just the control module wiring?

one of the primary reasons i went for the 8V wheel single stage to single stage less risk

I am fairly sure the two stage airbag system does not deploy both airbag charges at the same time in any circumstance. They are more likely to be staged with the second one being deployed dependent on the severity of the accident. Firing both charges at the same time would release a lot more gas into a more confined space probably leading to a higher peak pressure that may cause an issue. That is even assuming the ignitor circuit in the airbag module is happy to fire two airbags simultaneously. Probably will, but the only time you are going to find out is the moment you really need the airbag. I would see if you can find out which airbag cct is the more powerful one.

Ok... before we get too drawn into 'what the internet says' this might be worth a read..
https://audiforum.us/threads/audi-a3-crash-whit-singel-to-dual-stage-airbag-dont-do-it.10870/

I for one don't know enough about the airbag system to comment... but seems that obtaining a single stage airbag would be the preference

<tuffty/>

I read this thread about a month or so ago and that put me off the idea of a 8P flat bottom, single stage all the way. Not worth risking it.

Managed to get it all fitted and working like a charm! Glad my 8P multifunction module works.... my airbag didn’t go off either or any faults thank god! Haha.

excuse the mess, it was a bit rushed putting it all back together before leaving for London.

Just one thing to note.... when de-pinning the 8V airbag to slip ring connector. There is a small purple pin lock which slides threw the yellow block. Remove this and the pins will all come out. Don’t try and force the pins out without doing this or you’ll damage the pins and make it harder to get them out.

I just need to do some small coding changes next time to stop the women shouting at me in German

Next thing on this I’ll be looking at getting SDS to work.
