Hi all,

My alarm (99 1.8 t sport) has been acting very strange for some time now. At first the indicators stopped flashing when arming the alarm, now the alarm goes off whenever it feels like it. The only way i can stop this happening seems to be starting the car and resetting the alarm. I've checked all the sensors including the boot/bonnet and couldn't find any problems.

Does anyone know if there is a way of disabling the alarm.? The car spends most of it's life in a secure car park then in a garage so i can live without the alarm/immobiliser.

I guess another option would be to install a thrid party alarm, might be cheaper than Audi trying to fix this one.

Thanks for your advice in advance,

go into vag com and change the sensitivity to 50. XVW had a prob with his also, and they changed the interior sensors but I think the sensitivity tweak fixed it.

If you have access to vag com, it will also tell you which part of the alarm triggered .

Have you changed the siren?

Mine had leaked battery acid all over the printed circuits,

Rob

If its the sensors then try switching them off using the button low down on the doorpillar.
I'd say it is more likely the siren/controller as these have a battery built in and when it starts to die at about 7 years old the alarm thinks someone is trying to tamper with it so starts going off for no reason (and always at 3am). A new controller is about £80 IIRC but its right down the bottom of the left cubbyhole in the boot below the sub so is a real pain to get to. Not sure if you can pull a fuse, can't remember if this is also wired to the central locking.

Afternoon all,

Think i'm going to have to bite the bullet and get my alarm looked at by a specialist. Does anyone know of a good specialist in the northants/midlands area. Don't fancy getting stung by a stealer and i cannot spend another night turning the alarm off every 20 minutes. :)

Thanks in advance,
Rob.

Hi all,

Just got a quote form the local stealers, they want £167 just to DIAGNOSE the problem. they said it could take up to 1.5 hours to diagnose.

Does anyone know of a specialist/anyone with the vag diagnostic hardware/software. At least then i'll know what the issue is and only have to buy the required part.

Thanks in advance,
Rob.

hi mate your best bet is to come to leicester a alarm specialist called car tronics are very good in alarms my alarm just went off with out any lights flashing also im getting a 3 beep warning on the odd occation. need to get mine sorted my car is being such a pain first got engine probz now this. wanna sell it get a seat cupra r next. ill give you the number for them 0116 276 3716. i rang them he goes my best bet is to get a clifford matrix alarm fitted less hassell and saves money.

Fitting an aftermarket alarm will not make the problem with your factory fit alarm go away though will it. Most aftermarket alarm fitters will not remove the factory alarm (as they will not know how to) so it will still be activated when your aftermarket alarm operates the central locking.

I had an aftermarket alarm fitted to my S4 but still continued to have problems with the factory alarm. You need to find someone close to you who has VAG com or buy a lead (ebay) and have a go yourself (cheaper than £167 !). Turning down the interior ultrasonics did the trick on mine in the end. Luckily mine was done under warranty, they changed the main controller and it was in at least 3 times before they fixed it.

Thanks for the info all,

I can get an aftermarket alarm fitted for £180. The company will charge me an extra £40 to disable the existing alarm. It's an option worth considering.

I've also called a few specialists who seem reluctant to touch it. Think this kind of problem can be a pain.

I've booked it into Audi specialists in Burwell, cambs who said they will run the diagnostics to determine what the problem is.

I'll keep you all posted,
Cheers,
Rob.

Just a little update.

I've just noticed that the two leds in the roof lining between the front map lights and the middle sun visor aren't lighting up in red anymore.

I'm sure that they were lit before. I'm guessing this is part of the alarm and could be my problem.

Could someone please check their car to confirm my theory. Unless anyone knows what these leds are.

Thanks in advance,
Rob.

ORITE MATE THEM LITTLE LED LIGHTS BETWEEN THE MAP LIGHTS AND SUN VISOR MINE STILL LIGHT UP EVEN THOUGH IM HAVING SIMILAR ALARM PROBLEMS AS YOU. I DUNNO WHAT THOUGHS LIGHTS ARE FOR?

I'm not sure either but they come on when the sidelights are on so prob nothing to do with the alarm.

My mistake, sorry all.

The LEDs you refer to are to illuminate the console etc without dazzling and drawing your attention from the road, sadly nothing to do with the alalrm

All sorted guys,

Thanks to the very helpful people at the Audi specialists in Burwell. http://www.audi-specialists.co.uk/

They diagnosed in 5 minutes what Audi northampton quoted me 1.5hrs labour to diagnose.

It was the switch on the bonnet that was the problem. The cabling had fallen out of the clips and onto the fan causing the protective plastic to perish and exposing the bare wires. I've repaired these and not a peep from the car since.

They even set the central locking to automatically lock when the car moves for me. Thought this would be a good idea for when the missus drives it.

Again a big thumbs up to the lads at Burwell and thanks for all you suggestions/ideas on here. :)

Rob.
