to s3dave - I work as a sprayer for 20 years and I'm doing best I can, thx mate
Next step was air and all about that. So i decided to instal air box. I searched and wonderin 'what to install and finally decides to install NEUSPEED AIR BOX kit for vag 1.8 turbo engines. It was difficult to find (nothing was on ebay at the time) from America (where i could buy new) the postage is too expensive for the EU ...
... that comes installed something like this ...
Ok, this is not exactly airbox like a box more like a barrier but I knew that and I had intended to do some upgrade. I've been looking for quite some time and finally I was able to find one so i was immediately contacted the seller who sent me a box by mail. So i get this "air box" from second hand which was built in golf IV ...
... plate and small filter was used but large filter was brand new. When the box is sold was without a large filter but the seller was kind enough to buy a new and send me a complete kit for the same price - not many such a good people.
Of course not everything went pretty smoothly. This air box was not the best fit in the engine compartment of the audi so it was necessary to change a few things - move the whole box of 2 cm further away from the engine. I cut the bottom holder and welded to another place ...
... the plate is stainless so it was necessary to protect a weld for which I used a zinc spray (just temporary solution)...
... upper holder has only settled, newly tapped with an angle grinder and bend it other holder ...
... much more work has been with the top cover. From aluminum which is considerably softer and more easy to process and bending, with help of difrent pipes and the spacing between the boards on the work table, the top cover has been making ...
... little has sanded on the edges that will not be too sharp and little more was needed to cut because of the LMM to be well fited ...
...another problem was, since the diameter of the LMM corresponds to the outside diameter of the filter - 80 mm. So the filter could not be mounted on the LMM. To be able to combine those two things I had to cut the original intake tube that already occur in the original LMM (again only a temporary solution until I buy a proper tube)...
... composed ...
... supply of cool air comes just below the filter ...
... built-in now air box really looks like a box and not as some kind of barrier ...
Still has to be routed cold air supply from outside and this will probably routed behind the fog lights in the bumper to airbox through a tube.
... to be continued ...
