Hey people i went and met a guy with a mk1 gti today as a possible swap for my s3 and need some un bias help, im on thr fence and my friend said im gonna regret either decision and he is right...
I drive the s3 every 1-2 weeks and enjoy myself but love my retro cars. Today i climbed out of my s3 into a mk1 gti. The mk1 is track ready, stripped, lcr brembos, ronal aeros, tsr 2.0l 8v brands hatch engine, roll cage, poly bushed and vibraty and noisy as hell, you cant even compare them as cars, i go to retro show at santa pod every year.... im torn... help.

Let him swap with me and ill let you know if it was a good idea or not after?

Lol. In all honest its an absolute shock getting out from a nice smooth s3 into a track ready mk1! Mk1 feels very rough and dont even wanna run smoothly with that engine until 4k rpm! I have two mates saying mk1, one mate on the fence and missus saying s3.... must say it felt magic out in it, like i was in a clean mk1 escort the looks we got!-)

The mk1 is a fun toy to have as a second car, as a daily and your only car, the S3 without question.

lol cheers people, s3 is our second car anyway, both is not an option atm, opinions much appreciated!-)
jojo and voorhees thanks very much, not bum licking but seasoned respected members like yourselves, your opinions mean alot.

i am in favour of the golf at about 60/40 atm but ive had some wine and beer! Now i have three friends and missus saying golf as it more me!? i really do agree with my pal darren tho, i will regret either decision at some point!-)

You could buy an s3 tmro but could you buy a mk1 like that tmro?

Cheap nasty seats in the mk1. And that horrid standard steering wheel too?
Makes me wonder where else corners have been cut....

I'm all for track cars, but i think id stick with the s3 too

morning everyone, cheers prawn, with a clear head today im not sure i can do it, i actually love mk1 golfs but the reality of this one i think is too much of a contrast... you really dont appreciate how nice a place the s3 is to be until you jump straight in a polybushed, stripped mk1 lol.

never owned either cars or drove either, but the way i see it is the S3 is the MK1 of our generation, just more refined, if you like the track feel, strip an cage the S3...a car you know.

i think im with prawn on this, cheap seats ect, not a good look imo....

to summerise, keep the S3 you plonker lol

If it were a 20vt mk1 nicely built with a branded cage and decent seats, I'd definitely say take the mk1 for a weekend car.

As it is though, your S3 sounds pretty nice, and I think you'd miss the turbo shove!

Good call

If the mk1 was standard it would worth twice that of the S3, so it would be worth a swap just for the money you could make, but seeing as it has been messed with, I would stick with the far better quality S3.

cheers guys, least you lot can talk some sense into me, think my minds pretty much made up now... gotta get the 3 together and meet up with some of you lot for some track fun sometime!-) you should all come over to brands one weekend.

Good decision to keep it mate....

Must catch up again soon and have a tinker session on the motors...

Should definitely have a meet or two coming up in the next couple of months down the SE as well :)

Alright fella, yeah sounds good mate, gonna be doing a few things to the s3 to freshen it up in the next few weeks if im keeping her, coilovers and plasti dip the wheels first. not seen you about for a while, started to wonder if you still had yours! Hows it going? Past 200k yet?
