Potential dsg failure?!

Hi guys, bought my new s3 just over a month ago and I love it, had a few small issues with it as shown in my other thread but a new issue has popped up and it's gotten a bit more erractic of late and that's the dsg box on my 2010 Audi s3 with 31500 on the clock.

I'm getting the false netrual with it so to speak. The gearbox isn't jerky when moving off, it's absolutely slick and smooth throughout the gears, however I'm getting issues when the car is in reverse..

So while attempting to park I put it in reverse and it free-revs when I press the accelerator, and you can hear a clunking noise 5-6 times coming from the DSG, like it's trying to find the gear. If I catch it before it's finished and put it in drive again and then reverse again, it's ok, this has started to happen regularly..

Today I tried to put it into reverse trying to back out of a car park (car already running at optimal temp) and the car wouldn't move, the dash showed the R symbol which was flashing. Was there for about 2 mins trying to reverse, went from R to D to S then back to D than R and that didn't help. I turned off the engine and put it into reverse and it was fine. You always get a hard couple of seconds crunching noise if you put the car into R, as if the dsg box is struggling to properly engage and lock into R..

Could this mean potential dsg box failure? Clutch packs, oil change, dsg recalibration?

Just wondering what it do as it was purchase from a specialist dealer where their warranty is in house and any repairs I'd have to bring the car all the way to Bristol from Birmingham. Don't want to pay a penny from my pocket to see what the issue is..

Many thanks

When was the last time the gearbox oil was changed. I don't know if there is a time interval on the changes but the oil should be changed every 40K. If it hasn't been changed then that would be the first point of call.

That year is stronic & I'm sure its a dry box, but I would get the box calibrated 1st then see what occurs.

It sounds like the mechatronic unit has issues.

Get it serviced, its due every 40k and the 1st service is the most important. if its the 6 speed then its a wet clutch, what happens is the valves in the mechatronics unit get sticky and need a new lease of life. there are recalls on the 7 speed, something to do with synthetic oil affecting them at high temp and replacing with mineral oil.
Your car will be a wet clutch as the only dry clutch dsg is for the smaller engine cars and can only handle 250 n,m of torque.

Many thanks for your comments, I've checked the service book and the there's not work carried on when referring to the 'multitronic' section of the car so it obviously hasn't been done.

A fault code has been registered:

19143/P2711/010001 - Unexpected / Implausible Mechanical Gear Disengagement: No Signal/Communication
Possible Symptoms
  • Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) ON
  • Transmission Malfunction
  • Erratic Driving Behavior
Possible Causes
  • Double Clutch worn/faulty
  • Worn/Damaged gear shaft(s)
  • Output Shaft Speed Sensor 1/2 (G501/G502) faulty
  • Mechatronic Unit for Double Clutch Transmission (J743) faulty
Possible Solutions
  • Check Output Shaft Speed Sensor 1/2 (G501/G502)
    • Check Measuring Value Blocks (MVB)
  • Check/Replace Double Clutch
  • Check/Replace Mechatronic Unit for Double Clutch Transmission (J743)
Ideally I would prefer the Mechatronic unit to be replaced to be on the safe side but I can't see them forking out over a grand so easily like that..

Guessing I'll have to settle for allowing them to replace the gearbox oil first to see if it cures the problem? Because having paid 21000 for this car, there is no way I'm spending a penny on it under warranty fixing any issues.

This fault code has been logged using my scanner but I can't seem to find out what the hell it is on Ross tech.

It could be a dodgy switch on the gear selector within the gear stick, they are known to get faulty and its been discussed before on here.

Is there a particular name for this gear switch part? I'll get that replaced and get them to replace the stronic box oil as that's due now really and it's a fault so they should be rectifying that fault under warranty.. That's the least expensive first point of call to see if that fixes the problem and they better well pay up as I've totally lost confidence in the car!!

The switch in the gear stick is all part of the unit, so you have to change the whole unit I think from memory.

"The microswitch under the lever when in park can cause issues as above, it will present a fault log usually, so scan & check for error, if so then its a new gear unit needed, about £400 for the part, pita to remove/fit"

On a similar thread but nothing to do with issue with reverse issue I am having. Seems like that's a complete change then. (Gear unit) thanks will put forward to them but I can see them only doing the cheap fix option first.

Yeah they most probably will go with the oil and filter change on the box 1st, you never know it might sort it, good luck with it bud.

Who's the warranty with?
I had a complete new gearbox in my 2009 S3 Stronic through the approved scheme.
The car drove fine, it just had a very slight whirring noise on take off and from second to third. The Audi tech heard it and the warranty company just said "new gearbox"!

I bought the car through a specialist, they said warranty work is in house, they carry it out themselves, they said if I wanted to I could upgrade to AA, which I declined seeing as they need to fix any issues with the car for the first 6 months anyway..

They open shortly I'm going to call them and give them a list of issues I'm having and take it from there.

Ahh yes I remember the car now, it's the one that originally came from Manchester.
Did you not have any luck getting in touch with the previous owner to shed any light?

The gearbox was replaced under warranty by the dealership, cost them £1600. Had to complain on many forums for them to take notice however.

Car feels as good as new. Obviously with modified cars you will get problems lucky the box was replaced under warranty.
