Led Headlight Retrofit

Has anyone retrofitted the LED headlights to their 8V?

I didn't spec it on my S3 order, but I'm wondering if it's possible to buy them separately and then swap the Xenons out? Would hopefully make some money back too by selling on the Xenons.

Be very surprised if anyone has attempted this yet - you must be looking at well over a grand to buy the LED headlights separately.

Personally I think you'd be mad to do this if you already have Xenon's since there isn't that much difference (I paid the extra for the LED's but I'm still not convinced that they are worth it) but good luck to you if you go for it!

Not really worth the cost unless you can sell the xenon units for sufficient cost to drastically reduce the out of pocket-ness your about to experience for little to zero gain. Buyers remorse will be strong with this one I'm afraid.

Considering how much a single light unit is to replace (someone on this forum got stung for £1,000) I wouldn't bother. Xenons are just fine IMO. In fact the full beam on my S3 is excellent and I can't really see how LED's lights could improve on that.

    Hey Lads,

Cheers for all the replies, guess it's not worth it then! Will just stick with the Xenons :).

A while ago, part of me wondered whether I should have waited for the LED lights option (they weren't available when I ordered), but I've read lots of stuff since which basically echos the above views - that they aren't that much different or better than the Xenons, and not worth the money. I'm pretty happy with the Xenons on mine really, they are very good.

Not sure if true but my salesman believes a unit was £900 each. Can believe that seeing as an S3 alloy is £657!

I'm sure someone had a xenon unit replaced recently which was around £750. So I can imagine the LED units being somewhere around the £1k mark easily. Then you've probably got additional modules to fit too. Could be very pricey.

Also need a new control panel for headlights so you get the poor weather function. That won't be cheap....

Whilst I agree it's a bad idea to retro fit I disagree that they're not any different.
IMO there's a noticeable difference between xenon and the Led headlights - I find them a lot more detailed / crisp -
Plus I prefer the look of them too. :)

I have just had a look on the parts catalogue and the prices are...
Basic headlight - £1320, power module for cornering lights - £103, power module for dip/high beam - £103 and power module for DRL - £141.
So you would be looking at a price of at least £1667 for each headlight - £3334 for both.

Glad I spec'd them on the original order then, relative bargain :D

Another vote for them though (but not at £3,334!!), I find the whiteness of the light really good and the sign illumination distance is ridiculously good.

Yes when your order them as an option on a new car all you are paying is the £795 extra cost over xenon headlights.

The design of them to me is worth £795 alone!!! Xenons are good and have been for some time but led's are the future and don't care that they will probably progress technologically they are still a fantastic option I'm glad I ticked.

I don't disagree with you, it's just pointless for some one to retro fit these in hindsight based on the cost at almost no gain over xenon.

Sorry pole. Should of been a bit clearer....and stayed on topic. Clearly the cost out ways the desired look. Unless you've got unlimited funds or are prepared to make, to me and many others, a financially irrational decision, I'd just stick with the Xenons as they still are a good bit of kit and adding led's will do nothing to resale value should you decide to sell in the future.

Auto express have a A3 s line on a long term test. Their A3 after being damaged in a hit and run required a new LED headlight unit cost £1,173 plus fitting.

    Bump.

So, I'm interested in retrofitting full LED headlights. I currently have Xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights.

Anyone you familiar with installation process and VCDS coding?

I can get the below set for about $800 (about £500).

The set I'm buying will include:
8V0941033 & 8V0941034 (left and right LED headlights)
    7PP941472F control units
    7PP941329M AFS modules
    4G0907397Q DRL modules

Is this set complete or does it require other components to complete installation? If other components are required, can anyone spell out the other items that I'll need?

Yes, good point. Anybody know if the cabling/connection is the same as the Xenon/LED DRL that I currently have?

I got an amazing deal on the set. Less than £500 for everything, new, including all the modules. Now I just need to get it hooked up!

On Wayne's S3 (rs4tdi) he had Xenon but TukCustom apparently did a full swap and no coding was required...

Thanks. I get mixed messages! It would seem to me that it shouldn't be too difficult and I know it has been done. I just can't get anyone to give a definitive answer.

ANYONE have any experience coding the new LED lights? I am 99.9% sure that no additional hardware or wiring is required. But, coding is required in order to activate adaptive headlights, cornering lights, etc...

To the comments that there's little to no difference.

I think the turn signal integrated into the DRL is the Biggest difference of all.

In fact it's the one reason I want LED since the HID use a seperate bulb for the turn indicator.

Otherwise if HID also had an integrated indicator in it's DRL, I would pay the LED no mind.

I'm emailing Audi on this. I know it's crazy, but I wonder if Audi via the dealer would do this themselves. This would save the hassle of DIY, sure it'll probably be a couple grand. But in the end the improvement look of the A3 not looking like a B8.5 A4 is what I want the most.

Hi Guys, first time on here and I've been reading through with interest. My daughter has just bought an A3 TFSi S line 2014 and it was involved in a minor accident when it was a month or so old. It's been repaired, but there are a few minor issues. That's the background bit done, no back to the topic....

Whoever 'rebuilt' the car did it cheaply in places. The main one being the headlights. It has halogen headlights installed, with the wire 'chopped off' by the headlights and the headlight plugs changed with wires twisted together etc, not good! Now because of this we have lots of messages regarding headlights, DRL and headlight aim etc. I've bought the correct Xenon headlights which would have been fitted originally and now bought the plugs and cables via TPS. What I'm after is a wiring diagram or someone to simply tell me pin 1 is green/yellow, pin 2 is green/brown etc

Thanks guys, would really appreciate your help with this. Even if it's a couple of photos of someones plug on their own car, please guys I'm desperate!

    Cheers Chris

I can't believe you have bought a 2014 car that is so bodged, It's obvious the car couldn't have been insured when it was damaged because no self respecting garage would repair it like that.Wonder what else has been bodged.
    Hope this helps

On another note how reliable are these LED headlights, I can't see them lasting forever and with the cost of them I wouldn't be surprised if cars are targeted in the future just for the headlights.

Hi, Thanks for your help. The diagram is great and I have sent this to the auto electrician doing the job. Hopefully he will understand it as to me it looks like spaghetti! I was hoping for a simple 'dumb down' version that said Green/Grey pin 3 etc! lol! But thanks anyway, great forum and speedy help!

Did you end up finishing what you set out to do? Were there any more parts you needed?
