I hate to bring the topic of tyres up, but...

It wouldn't have crossed my mind at all, I've only put 4000 miles on the car after all, but since it's been getting cold, my god the P Zeros are horrid, I felt safer last winter in my front wheel drive A3 with some pretty knackered mixed tyres on (I would normally change to match all four because OCD and whatnot but was holding out as I knew I would be getting a new vehicle).

Even pulling out of parking spaces etc the amount the car has been slipping is ridiculous.

Anyway it's prompted me to look, and although I'm keen to go for Michelin PS4's, has anybody used the Hankook Evo's???

Bit of a curve ball that one everyone goes between Michelin, Pirelli's, Conti's or Goodyears from what I've seen.

Before anyone goes off on one about buying a high end car but not willing to put high end tyres on it, my colleague's S4 arrived with them on?

Anyone had them, are they confidence inspiring and how long did they/seem to be holding up?

Another highly rated one online seems to be Dunlop Sportmaxx's but I am yet to see a performance car with them on forgive me if I'm wrong.

I have Bridgestone Turanzas with 11,000 miles on them, 6mm tread left all round (car came with these tyres). I have also been sliding a bit. Not in ice or snow just in the low temperatures. I went to check the treads this morning and found the tyres very oily. Maybe I drove through a diesel spill, I don’t know. Anyway, guessing the Winter will only get worse I’m going to get a set of second-hand S3 Winter alloys and put Winter tyres on them. My current alloys are the 18 inch 10 spoke titanium matte diamond cut which are rather expensive and I don’t want them trashed by salt and potholes! The other advantage of 2 sets of rims with mounted tyres is it’s very easy to switch back to the Summer set up. Knowing my luck the Winter will turn mild now!

If you want one set of tyres that will behave this Winter but still be good in Summer then maybe Michelin Crossclimate + ?

I run PS4 on the shiny 10 spoke oe alloys and Dunlop wintersport5 on a set of titanium 10 spoke oe alloys.
PS4 are pretty good on everything other than very cold ambient (less than maybe 0deg) and hot ambient (above 25deg) where they feel like they smear a little too much for me rather than grip, the winters are superb imo........remarkably grippy in the real cold and wet but surprisingly good even in warm temperatures.

Done 3 winters and maybe 10k miles on the winter tyres and are maybe half worn, titanium alloys are unmarked and as good as new.
Ironically an Audi man once told me the titaniums are better built and will survive winter better.

Swapped out my Conti's for some PS4 S a few weeks ago. Massive improvement.

Got Hankook Ventus S1 evo2 K117 on my old BMW 120d, drove them for 30.000 miles without any complaint. Even with launch control and the 380Nm from the diesel engine they were able to stick to the road like glue. It's worth noting that the AO version of the tyre have a nice rim protection whereas the non-AO version got nothing that reminds of rim protection.

I recently changed from Conti SC5's to GY Eagle Asy3's & they were excellent in the icy conditions at the weekend, even after having been stood in freezing conditions for a week+ at Heathrow. I like the Michelins to but have no experience of the Hankooks to be able to offer an opinion on them unfortunately.

PS4S completely changed the car from the OE Pirelli's. No slip or understeer unless doing something completly stupid and no low temperature breakaway. It almost felt like the Pirelli's were "hard" when cold or in the wet. Michelins are quieter, lighter, stickier, more progressive, steering is more accurate and they seem to grip everywhere.

Have you ever driven a car with winter tyres? Even cheap winter tyres will outperform high end summer tyres when the temperature drops below 5 degrees. The performance difference will be even bigger on ice and snow compared to summer tyres.

I really can't come up with what to say to make people go more crazy than admitting running summer tyres during winter here in Denmark :stupid:

I usually drive to Germany in the Winter and it's a legal requirement to have Winter tyres. In the UK there is no legal requirement. The reason we appear so hopeless in snowy weather in the UK is that it's so unpredictable. In the mountainous areas snow is guaranteed every year so the locals act appropriately but in the South it's a different story. As a keen gardener I keep an eye on the temperatures every day. Sometimes we can have a whole Winter with not a flake of snow and barely a sub-zero night. Even when we do have some snow and freezing weather it may only last a few days and then weeks of mild weather. Many years I've had roses blooming on Christmas Day! Then a severe Winter catches us completely unprepared and there is chaos. So it's not a straightforward decision whether to switch to Winter tyres in much of the UK. My commute to work is long and through the countryside and at 0530 in the morning when it is usually at the coldest. One morning with hardly another car on the road a car overtook me and spun out a few hundred yards ahead. He bounced of the central barrier and then smashed into the nearside barrier. By a miracle I stopped and avoided collision but at this point I decided no more Summer tyres in Winter.

Michelin PS4's - I Love mine ! Had Conti's all round before that and they slipped all over the place - Michelin PS4's grip so much better!

My A3 came with a set of Hankook Ventus S1 evo2 K117 and I think they're great. Great for braking in the wet and on the snow we've had they've provided good traction. Obviously if you brake hard, you'll slide but its better than with other cars I've driven with other tyres. They're also reasonably priced and Oponeo.co.uk can give you a set for just over £300! That's for the AO, XL ones so you get a bit more strength in the sidewall (ideal for bumps in the road). Nice tread pattern too and decent rim protection :)

Cheers for all the feedback guys, taking into account everything I've heard and looking online, I reckon I'll be putting Michelins on after all, may even get rid of these P zeros early, I reckon they're responsible for more deaths in the cold than hypothermia...

I got some V-rated Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4's for my winters and they are pretty awesome. I've tried Michelin X-Ice and Bridgestone Blizzaks before on previous vehicles and never thought either was very good, so decided to try some new ones with my S3. Pricing is right up there with the
Pirelli Winter SottoZero but worth every penny IMHO!

I bought a set of Audi Winter alloys and tyres and yes since then we’ve not had a flake of snow but joking aside they are much better on all parameters in temperatures below 7 degrees C.

It's a bit like remembering to take an umbrella......then it won't rain! I have a rather ridiculous commute (86 miles each way) and I also set out at 0530 so if the weather is cold I will find it!

My car with just 1500 miles on the tyres is doing the same in this very cold weather its minus.....etc every day this month up here in Scotland besides that,my sportback S3 didnt do this last winter on conti 5's 225/40/18, all i can put this down is the larger wheels and wider tyres,l trusted my sportback more than the saloon in these conditions....it went everywhere easily....its the size of tyres not the tyres,my FN2 type R was the same in the winter...****** useless it had very expensive Yokohama tyres

Still no need for winter tyres though....in the UK,their for folks who are scared of driving in the snow, and believe me no winter tyre will pull you out of a hole if the weather gets really bad....
