Hi

I have a 2014 2.0 TDI 184 with manual box. I couldn't find many threads on gearbox oil change for the 8v. Is it needed? Just hit 116,000 miles. Touch wood no problem with gearbox but I wonder if 'longlife' is pushing it a bit.

Thanks, Kris

I'd do it.

I've done it on previous cars (gearboxes and rear differentials on Torsen quattros) with considerably fewer miles than yours - not that I'm suggesting for a minute you should have done it before now - and for a couple of reasons:

'Filled for life' is a load of horse feathers. If something was genuinely filled for life it'd be a sealed unit with no way of renewing what's inside, and gearboxes have somewhere to drain the old oil out and somewhere else to put new stuff in.

And I reckon it's just sound practice anyway. All oil gets old and less effective over time and through use.

There's no way it can do anything but good.

Makes sense, just thought it unusual that not many threads on the subject. Only had car a couple of months, but nothing in the service schedule to suggest it has been done. Do you know if instructions anywhere? Have done it before on a Fiat and Clio.

In that situation, and at that mileage - with almost all of those miles having been done with a pair of mysterious buttocks in the driving seat - I reckon getting the gearbox oil changed would definitely be a good wheeze.

This is going to sound patronising, but it isn't intended that way; you've obviously got mechanical empathy, because if you hadn't, the chances are it wouldn't have occurred to you to think about it at all.

It'd probably make you feel better to do it. Clean slate and all that.

I can't help with instructions, but I bet Google could.

I normally change the gear oil every 50,000 miles on my vehicles.

For the minimal cost it's worth doing especially if you can do it yourself.

Incidentally what about the transmission unit the Haldex is bolted to? Is there an oil change interval for that?

NB - poster has noted this a facelift. But then that it is 2014. If 2014, then it is pfl
Previously when I’ve started a thread it wouldn’t let me without selecting from the little drop down box and facelift is the only option.
Now I’m wondering if I imagined it all. It’s a prefacelift

I booked the car in with a VAG specialist (they’ve been mentioned favourably on here a few times) and I asked them how much to change the gearbox oil - they said it’s something they very rarely do, that they’ve had cars with 250,000 miles on the clock still on original long life oil.

Not saying I’m not going to do it, just curious that a garage would say that when offering them work

The gearbox oil on my RS3 was changed by Audi within the first 2.5 years / 40k miles. Not sure when the actual service mileage is though - 36k eg a multiple of 9?

Edit - dsg though.

Which is another way of saying that it's something customers very rarely ask them to do, and that's probably because most customers don't even think about having it done.

Prevention is better than cure...

umm,
the one I use routinely changes gear and final drive every 40k and I didn't have to ask (Torsen though).
Why not do this - its relatively cheap 'insurance' ?

Yes. Don't skimp on gearbox oil changes if it's required. Major money if it goes wrong.

What is the correct oil for the 2016 6spd manual 8v FL gearbox and the transfer box the haldex bolts to?

Will be at 50,000 at next service and want to do the gearbox, transfer box and haldex at the same time.
