I've finaly started seriously looking into fitting some gauge's to keep a eye on whats going off.
I know how to fit a boost gauge but how do you go about fitting AFR and oil pressure gauges.
Ive been told for the AFR gauge you need to connect it upto the lambda sensor, this correct?
The oil pressure one will require wiring upto a oil ressure sendor or if that fails fitting a oil filter sandwich plate adaptor.

Both the oil and AFR gaugesare electrical and the boost one will be mechanical.

Cheers guys. :)

dosen't the liquids3 gauge do all of that and it plugs into the obd port

i have an oil pressure gauge its an electrical one with the sender as you describe, fitting it was a pian though i used a banjo bolt where an oil pipe comes out from the top of the oil filter housing i drilled down the head of the bolt then welded a brake pipe union onto the face of the banjo bolt so as oil can go through the banjo bolt and into the oil line, i then made up a oil line using some braided hose and joined that to the brake pipe union and the sender,

:sadlike:, that sounds like alot of work, where you live again kev! :) haha

sorry mate im not interested in doing this again in a hurry

That bad then, whats the other alternative?

use the sandwich plate idea you sugested would work i only done it my way as it was cheaper for me as i could do it my self, you will probably need some unions etc to get the sender fitted and maybe a oil line like m braided hose as you may be restricted with space, its worth it though i love my gauges and there handy

Ok, what is a sandwhich plate though, is it a form of oil cooler? If it is, doesnt a oil cooler replace the oil filter?

Yeah i can imagine, i realy want some.

A sandwich plate goes between the engine block and the oil filter allowing fitment of an oil cooler. Mocal make a large range of them mate, any good motorsports parts supplier should be able to supply.

so are they easy to fit?
Is it worth fitting an oil cooler?

to fit the sandwich plate will be easy but its still going to be a pain to fit the prssure sender into the sandwich plate, if your to go down the oil cooler route then it could be easier to fit the sender as you might be able to buy a cooler kit with a sender location bit built into it, only problem is that there isnt much room to fit the cooler. to be honest you should'nt really need a oil cooler unless your tracking the car regularly or you thrash the car on long drives, but if your tracking your be better with a dry sump mod.
if you use a decent grade oil then you wont need an oil cooler anyway as it will keep to its viscosity rateings as you wil see once the gauge is fitted, i use castrol oil which holds 1.8 bar pressure at idle what ever i do thrash it long drive etc but with a cheaper oil it used to drop to 1.3 bar after a thrash or long drive

Was going to say i only know people who do track days that fit oil coolers.
May leave it then, liquid s3 is tempting but i like my vents too much.

Dan,
You want to fit 3 gauges without loosing a vent?
Ive fitted a boost gauge to the pillar trim ( a pain) but i think anymore than 1 on there will block your view and look "jap style" ive got an innovate afr to fit so ive plumped for the drivers air vent pod.
Realisticaly its the only place i think looks anything like oem.
There are pods that mount on the stearing column but they get in the way and block your view of the standard dials.

i think 3 gauges might be a bit to much but 2 on the a pillar is fine i have custom made mine and to me and most people who get in my car think its oem also my dials light up exactly the same as the instrument pannel to me its definantly not jap

that holder for the liquid screen looks rather good where did you get it ?
did you have to drill a hole in the dash for the cable or how did you get that to work
cheers scott

WOW !! That was a lot of work to fit an oil pressure gauge. I just used a T piece and put the OE sender in one end and the electronic one in the side. Job done, the T peice was around a £10 delivered IIRC

Correct mates its a tt vent sprayed black. As far as usabilty its not a bad bit of kit, once you out of the menu and viewing, say air fuel ratio, in a gauge format its pretty clear.

Bansheeboyo

Got the metal holder from a guy in the states found on a tt website, ModShack is what the guy goes under, new vent for 35 off a guy on the tt website (70 plus vat new from audi), no drilling pal, what i did is hot glue a tomtom windscreen mount (XL model very strong grip) to the back of the holder and the wire goes down the side of the car tucked behind the rubber and in to the diagnostic port. I'll take some pictures in a while.

So where did you tee the T piece in then ?

If you don't want to lose any vents and you feel that fitting 3 guages to the pillar will obstruct your veiw, then why not fit them in the centre - just lose the ashtray or the little 'cubby-hole' above it.

Of cousre you could always fit a mini PC in there instead and be really flash!!

I've been wondering if something like a Dell mini9 hooked up via VAGCOM might be usable - might be a bit OTT though!!

so did you remove the oe sender and put the T piece in the the two senders into the Tpiece?? i thought about that but it didnt cost me anything to do it my way just a bit of time,

I would alos like to know, the easier the better.

Ive considered a mini pc but havent really seen any!

Here's the tip of the iceberg:

Maybe a few ideas:

With Windows & VAGCOM loaded and a few peripherals, you can have different gauges every day, as well as SAT NAV, Movies, Tunes etc etc.

Or you could simply mount a Dell, HP, Acer etc "mini" laptop in a craddle, or even butcher one to fit like a purpose PC like those in the above sites - although touch-screen would be nice I suppose!!

Here you go pal. Been taking some readings off the liquid and I still maintain its a good bit of kit, noticed the other day that the MAF readings were low, on VAG to double check, MAF dying, brought new one. job done.

I can take some pics of it working tonight so you can see pal.
