It's possible, I've long suspected it's disappearing into the cylinders.

Could this therefore be the reason why my recently empty coolant expansion tank looked like this do you think?

I think I have what you both are describing - re gearbox from 1st to 2nd.

Up to 10,000 miles, the shifts from 1st to 2nd have been smooth and seamless.

However lately, if I'm pulling out out of a junction first thing in the morning, and wish to make progress, the change from 1st to 2nd has become "lurchy" and it changes up with a jerk.

I'll certainly be mentioning it at the service, I suspect a DSG oil change will cure that, but thats not due until 38,000 miles .............
Sorry to drag up an old post but I have just started to experience this quite bad. I have a hill to climb to get from my house to the main road every morning for work, this hill likely starts at around 12% inclination and then shifts to 15% or so for a short period (not that there are sings!). The whole road is maybe 100 metres long. When I pull out and head up the hill in D1 it shifts to D2 almost immediately as if it hasn't detected the gradient!! Car almost sounds like it going to stall until I give it a little and it shifts back to first for the whole hill! When it changes gear its certainly noticeable in the cabin as a lurch but 2nd through 3rd and so on is fine.

Brought it up when I had my 19k service but they were unable to replicate the issue. Probably because it was done on the flat!

just had a call from the Mrs,
warning light on dash, coolant low, turn off engine!
she had just pulled up at a car park...
shall I ring the dealer and then have to take it there tomorrow morning or shall I ring audi and get them to come out?
car has only done 9k and will be 2 years old in March 2016....

Slowly undo coolant cap, the level will probably rise a bit and then you can top up with water. It'll be ok to drive until you call the dealer.

Thought I would do a quick New Years update on this situation:
After having had the water pump replaced I still had a problem....then it went back in to have the coolant expansion tank replaced at which point they flushed the system and refilled. This was done 3 months ago now and I have not lost any further coolant. All seems to be working as it should now.

Do you have a pic of the coolant expansion tank?

Just an update from myself. I'm in my second Audi s3 8v a year on since I put up this post and last week the coolant warning symbol popped up.
It's a 15 plate and just covered 8800 miles.
Rang Audi support and they just said to top it up myself roadside. Turned the engine off and on after topping up the coolant and warning disappeared. I have decided to wait and see if the warning pops up again then I think I'll take a trip to Audi.

My S3 has 17700 miles on it and I've had the warning twice.
first time I popped the bonnet and it was at the min mark so switched back on and light cleared. that must have been at about 9-10000 miles.
Second time was only last week and was below the min. Drove it to Audi and they took it in and topped it up and ran a leak test which showed no issues.

Point of note though, coolant has always been low since I picked her up and both times it has happened I have been belting on at a decent pace.

Will keep an eye on it and let you know if it happens again but I put mines down to low levels and high speed just tripping the sensor and no more.

Mine has just consumed 50% of the coolant after 400 miles. The dealer topped it up 7 days ago.

Had this on mine 12 months in. Came on and went straight to dealer. Was air in the system so when let it out the water levels rose to normal. Topped up with some water and its been fine for months later. Can be common on new cars if not had any maintenance checks etc. Hope that helps.

This is what was happening to me. Happened 4 times over 18 month. I had the car in for an inspection last week and they found a leak from the thermostat housing.

I never got told what it was! I ended rejecting that car and negotiated a new one with audi. To be honest since getting my new one have had the coolant light pop up twice, have not had a chance to get it booked in but have a service due soon so may mention that.

Hello gentlemen!
More news from Spain...
Have the same problem in a Nov 2014 S3
In the first 15.000km (9.300Miles) had to refill twice, second time left the car at the garaje to check it, Audi said there was no leak, refilled to the top, put a mark on it and let me drive it.
On the next 10.000km(6.200Miles) went from the mark to the minimum, at this point the car has 25.000km and got the oil service advise.
Left the car yesterday morning and now had the call saying they asked audi factory? and according to them due to an "intelligent Thermostat" there are cases of cars with air in the system even with 25.000km...
They say they did pressure test, and there was no leaks at all.
He doesn't know what to say about the coolant smell in the engine.

I am starting getting a bit angry.
