Hi, another one of these questions.

Ive heard somewhere that if you get the Coolent temp to display on the Climate control and compare it to the Needle temp gauge you can assess what part you need.....

So i did this. climate control was at about 60c the needle was at 75-80c

does this mean the sensor is knackered? the thermostat seemed to open up at around 30c because after 30c the temp shot up to 50 pretty quickly.

if it is the sensor which one on eurocar parts do i need. i have a AMK facelift S3

If your dash needle doesn't reach the halfway point (90 degrees) and stay there then your thermostat will need replacing. The thermostat is completely mechanical and opens when the coolant temp gets up. I'd start by replacing that first if it doesn't stay at 90 then see how you get on.

You'd really be better replacing the temp sender first as it is an easy 10min DIY job.
If the thermosat is stuck open then the car will only reach operating temp when idling for a long time.
If the thermostat is stuck shut then the car will overheat on the motorway.
If the temp sender is faulty then you will get quite random results. Car never reaching 90, stalling when cold, hard to start, idling like a dog etc etc.

its a strange one, car doesnt overheat so i dont think its stuck closed. if anything it struggles to get to 90c, but when it does it doesnt stay there for long and drops down to 70c. however i dont have any problems starting it, and it idles perfectly even at the moment with the -7c weather.

so i think its pointing to the temp sender, inconsistent results.

Also its an easier job to replace and the part is roughly the same price.

is this the right part? temp transmitter?

or where is the sensor located so i can take it out and find a part number

That's the point, give the dealer your reg and they'll give you the right part number.
