Hi, i am looking to spend around £5-6000 on a new car and the s3 has caught my eye, im after something a bit understated but very capable.

Can anybody tell me what the diffrence is mechanicly between an s3 and the regular s3 1.8t?

I understand the s3 has some kind of 4wd system and more power. Is the engine in the 1.8t a3 the same?

Perfomance wise why should i get the s3 and not a a3 1.8t and remap it?

Can the s3 be remapped to produce more power than an a3 1.8t with a remap?

Sorry for all the questions

S3 = top of the range with 210/225bhp(depending on year and engine code), and has quattro(Haldex conrolled part time 4wd) as standard.
A3 in 1.8T form comes in 1.8T sport with 150bhp or 1.8T QTS(QuattroSport) with 4wd and 180bhp out the box.

S3 has a bigger turbo and maps to about 255-260bhp, A3 1.8T maps to between 190-210bhp depending on the year of car and which K03 turbo the car has.

Definately go for the S3, don't waste your time with an A3 1.8 T quattro. Nice cars but you'll only wish you'd bought the S3 instead!

Plus, for another £350 you can have the S3 running 260bhp. Then you'll have a 260bhp turbo 4x4 with comfort as well!

Spend nearer 6k for a decent car.

Make sure its had cambelt, water pump etc changed and has FSH

Other options are personal choices!

Happy hunting. Classifieds on here is a good place to start!

Thanks for the replys.... been looking at a few cars other than the s3 and i there dosent seem to be anything else out their with simular spec and performane that isnt too in your face beemers and golfs etc.

What is the next step for more power from the s3 after a remap for get filters exhaust etc im thinking more in the region of 325bhp.

bigger turbo? how much power can the stock internals take?

Some good info on what’s available on the JBS site mate:

http://www.jbsautodesigns.co.uk/category/71/turbo-kits

Remap should see you too about 260 bhp for a stage one map, about 280 bhp for a stage two map but you'll need an exhaust, 3" down pipe and FMIC. From what I've read, the pistons are good for 400 bhp but the rods are pushed to their max for anything over 350bhp / 320ft lbs. That seems to fall nicely in the range of the GT28RS big turbo kits. It gets expensive very quickly! Some more info I found here:

If you can raise a bit more then you can buy one for about £7-8k which is running 350ish bhp reliably with a big turbo conversion, cheaper than getting it done yourself!

Im looking to sell my higher-powered one shortly, been a great car and glad I didnt go for a standard one or even worse an A3!

I guess if you're planning to modify it, it makes sense to start with a decent one with mods that are already done
