:keule:i just bought a p reg a3 and it drives like a dream
only problem is sometimes on startup, it starts revs to 2000rpm and cuts out!!
it can do this 3 times or like 10 but eventually it always starts up
it doesnt cut out if im slowing down only when i start her up

any ideas what it could be??

thanks

Yup, sounds like a MAF problem - try unplugging the MAF to see if anything changes.

Get it on Vag-com, it might help to narrow it down.

Could also be the immobiliser kicking in, common problem on the A4, not that common on the A3. The reader coil can get interference and trip the immobiliser. Does the "key" warning light come up on the dash when it cuts out?
Try moving the steering column up & down, if that helps then it's either a bad conection or the reader coil is picking up electrical interference from other wires and you need to move it away from the main ignition switch wiring.

^^ It's starting to happen more and more on the older A3's now. Look for the flashing yellow key symbol when it occurs

My old golf did this... its the transponder, in the column has a problem reading the key, sometimes old keys can loose they're charge or be temporarily disabled from a magnet or something.. you get get your keys recoded, however the best option is to change the transponder module.. i think they're around the £100..
