i sevice my own car, last time it was done, it was done by a specialist. and they did the timing gear etc

now in 1 is flashing, i have done a oil change before it was due.

but how do i reset the dash, its the older type dash with the small lcd display.

What age is your car mate? If you have the digital clock then I think you can do it via the clock / trip buttons if it's an analogue clock then you'll need to do it via VAGCOM

itd a 1997. i think it has a analouge clock.

and ive heard stuff about vagom, no idea what it is or how to use it.

Dude, for anyone with a hope to understgand what's going on in their VAG car, vag-com is a must.

Basically, its an application that allows your computer (laptop) to communicate with the On Board Diagnostic computer (OBD) in the car. It also allows you do turn off the service light, for example.

Ross Tech make the software. There are many versions knocking about, but the first thing to do is pick up a lead. You can get cheap ones on fleabay, but that limits your choice of vagcom version.

Buying an original ross tech lead allows you to use pretty much any version of the software, but are quite steep to buy.

Hope that helps!

Hi buddy i reset my one by switching off the ignition push and keep the trip reset button in turn on ignition and wait a few seconds it should reset a far as i can rember hope it helps

without being cheeky anyone live near me who would turn it off for me?

and where do i get this ross tech lead if i need to get one?

mine has a digital clock and had to be done with vag-com.it wouldnt work the way it tells you in the book that came with the car.

have you not tried the way that tazzy suggested? i'm sure i tried something like that before and it cleared my service indicator.

My 1998 S4 reset the service lights by using the twiddly knob method, it has an analogue clock. However my father-in-laws 1997 2.8 wouldn't reset using that method, had to reset it using vagcom. How strange!

the early cars like adams cant be reset with the buttons,

You need vagcom and you need to input the number of KM's or days until you want the light to come back on.

yeah i try'd the pressing button mehtod,. it isn't having it :(

dammit gonna have to buy a lead. and either borrow a laptop or buy one.

If you want a laptop for this, get yourself on ebay and pick up an older P3 class machine. You'll find something that will be more than powerful enough for about £50 quid.

Just as long as it has a USB port you'll be golden.

I'm in Chester with the FULL vagcom, can do a scan and clear fault codes etc. Never worked on your car before, but if we can find the procedure for clearing the service code, I'd be happy to do that for you :)

procedure is on the ross-tech site.

from memory there are 4 channels that need amended.

Instruments, Adaption, Channels 5-8.
5 is thousands of KM's till next oil change,
6, is thousands of km's to next in1,
7 is 10's of days to next in1 and
8 is 10's of days till next in2

look it up to confirm though.
