Finally done!
B7 RS4 360mm floating discs under 8 pot brembos at the front
B5 RS4 304mm(IIRC) discs and calipers at the back.
Goodridge Motorsport braided stainless hoses all round.
Wheels and new tyres on top of new brakes all done (would like to say it was easy but I had to get some assistance as EVERYTHING was seized!, caliper bolts, hub bolts, flanges, driveshafts, handbrake cable, every single brake fitting.
Arches are a little closer than they should be after the work done but it is going back in to rectify that.
just need to bed in the pads and get that stupid coating off. shouldn't take too long!
Anyway, actual first hand experience and not speculation for those of you thinking of fitting very large brakes on standard Master Cylinder.
pedal is solid, right there, no huge travel or sponginess at all. very nice modulation compared with stock, even on bedding in.
rumours that the stock M/C won't support 8 pots and larger rears is does not hold up in this case.
running EBC yellow stuff which may prove to be too hard in the long run. we will see. definitely inspires a bit more confidence when hot. old ones scared the pants out of me when hot!
Part list for those planning a winter brake swap.
for a B5 A4 (non S4)
- 2 S4/RS4 front uprights (preferably with new bearings)
- 2 front S4/RS4 front drive shafts (only for the outer CV, fit this to you exisiting drive shaft and inner cv combo)
- 4 Calipers (any combo of B5/B7 S4 and RS4 calipers will now bolt on to your uprights)
- New hoses for appropriate brakes (they are longer in all cases)
- New fluid, flush and replace
with a bit of shopping around and selling of old bits I reckon I have spent less than a grand on all four discs and calipers with new pads, hoses and fluid.
I would struggle to do that with new standard bits!
I did have to stick some labour on top as I ran out of time (MOT expired unexpectedly 3 weeks ago!)
