MAF Diode?

I ordered a new MAF for my 1.8T in an effort to cure my bad fuel consumption. Anyway, the new MAF came and when I plug it in it kills the engine - tick over but engine cuts out when you accelerate.

When I look at the old MAF it has never had a diode attached, but the new one does.
Does anyone know if there should be a diode?

The part number is 0 280 218 032 for a 1999 APU 1.8T.

I assume its a cheapy copy? As i tried 2 of those from different places and had different results from each. Ended up getting an OE one for less than the 2 cheapy ones costed

Get a genuine MAF as I've heard countless storiesof the patern items being about as much use as a snooze button on a fire alarm

It is a cheap ebay copy, so will try and get my money back on that and get a genuine part.
Still not sure about the missing diode though.

Why would anyone make a fire alarm with a snooze button? That would be stupid.
