A3 170 TDI Tuning

Are you going to volunteer yours to be one of the first to be improved then Dave?

No I don't think so. I'm quite happy with my 170 as it is.

Free trials have never been offered on Revo diesel remaps and there's nothing to do with cutting out after 15 minutes, where does this tosh come from?? As we offer 30 day money back guarantee on remaps (which I've never had to use) and I run a diesel demonstator, diesel trials aren't an issue.

Revo use rolling roads at Stealth (a Revo dealer a few miles away) and another specialist 4wd RR who aren't dealers. Personally I don't use rolling roads when I remap customer cars, as I think if you can't tell the difference when you drive the car, why are you buying the remap?

Some people are very focused on RR numbers, but they can't show you how the car performs in real world driving. Hey, each to their own.

The dealer told me the problem with the remap reverting to normal after 15 mins is the reason Revo don't offer the free trial on Diesel cars!

I think the main reason for RR figures is pub bragging!

Slightly off topic, but has anyone else had their 170 TDI 're-mapped' by Audi? Had mine done the other day when it was in to have the steering rack replaced under warranty. Its termed a '23B6 recall' on the invoice.

I was told it was to improve cold weather starting, but I wonder if its Audi's 'tractor-engine' fix? (I've only had very mild / transient 'tractor-engine' moments since switching to ultra-low-sulphur fuels). The engine does seem perkier since this official 're-map'. Anyone else have experience of this?

I've had mine done by Audi since new. I got given a normal 170 FWD for a week before mine arrived. Its fair to say that I gave that car a spanking as it wasn't mine!

Couldnt really tell the difference in power between that and mine to begin with as and I took care of it (running in etc). Plus I got quattro which will sap a little of the power. But I'm happy with the results. Coming up to 2k miles on the car and it pulls like a train with no problems to report.

Its showing figures of 205bhp and I cant remember the torque off the top of my head. I had the DPF light come up a couple times but thats just me doing short trips for a while. It sorts itself out once the engine fully heats up. Cant see it being a problem with any Euro trips.

But I've got the peace of mind of still being covered by full manufacturer warranty and a 3 year warranty on the remap itself.

Do I understand correctly from your post that AUdi have re-mapped your car to 205bhp foryou? Where?

Oh dear... really didnt mean to open a can of worms with this post......

To be honest... Im also happy with the stock performance of my 170... would be curious if any Scottish dealers stepped up to the challenge on here though.......

Yea. Had it done at Hitchin Audi. My dad had his Q7 re-mapped there as well.

So who's had a Revo conversion? Any news?

GIAC will be releasing theres within 2 months, they are currently working on the 170TDI and have engines stripped as part of the process to gain a full understanding of this particular engine and the issues experienced with DPF.

Just food for thought if in no rush and wishing to have more to choose from at time of purchase.

Marc get onto STAR performance they do the Giac remap with the switchable controller. They live map the car on the rolling road instead of all this pish from Bluefin and revo where its a generic map. Also any hassle and they are just down the road from you. Thats who im using for my big turbo

So generic maps are pish are they? What you're saying is that EVERY new car comes with pish software!

Every new car (apart from uber expensive customs) comes with a generic map as standard and no-one comlpains that it's 'pish'. Yes a custom map will usually be better if your engine is not exactly like the manufacturer specs. If it is a perfect engine, then a generic map is perfect as it was written for it like that.

Why people keeping slagging off generic maps is beyond me. Custom maps are only of real benefit if there's a problem with the engine (i.e. flatspots) or it has non-standard parts.

no way you can say 2 engines are the same so a generic map works inside a parameter hence a custom map will use the engine to its full ability. And yes factory maps are pish as they are set up to pass emissions tests most new cars have set flat spots for that reason as the test is done at a certain point in the rev range.

Correct In the EU- the Generic Factory Maps are setup for Emissions purposes... and Euro 4 compliance!!!

No Two Factory Cars will be exactly Identical.... Like Finger prints!!!

£499. + £149 if you want the serial swtching box to switch between std and performance maps.

OK, so Revo measured a stock 170 TDI at 190hp and 285ftlb or thereabouts. (Stock numbers are 168hp and 258ftlb). My gut instinct is not to believe this. Dyno's can be set up to read just about anything and of course it is great to flatter the results as there is a tendancy to quote the biggest numbers. The comparison figures cannot be disputed but the actual numbers I think are dubious unless there is some clear info that shows the dyno is calibrated and used correctly.

Anybody know how well set up the Revo dyno is??

Guy

Thus why we've quoted the comparison figures... we aren't trying to claim your car will see 225+bhp. We've run the cars on numerous different dynos to get an idea of differences we would expect to see and they all vary. However the increase from stock to performance is always consistant.
The whole point of showing/quoting what we've 'seen' as stock is so you can see the increase, not take the top number as gospel.

Again it goes back to the relavance of peak figures... at the end of the day they mean very little, you have to look at the comparison between stock and performance and the midrange increase along with drivibility. This is why I believe dyno days to be a complete waste of time because each and every person pays money to see a figure that isn't necessarily relavent but are lead to believe it's the be all end all!

£149 for a switch seems a tad expensive....is it really worth it?
