I thought I'd bore you, fellow B7ers,with the universal Audi/VW dilema of bad FM reception (affects many many contemporary other makes too -particularly German). Might serve as a reference for someone, even though most of us have well passed the need now. Although this has been covered extensively through the years, almost everyone is wrong about it, particularly the antenna adaptor makers and most fitters too. Although I'm not a pro mechanic I am a professional broadcast technician and have been involved in sound systems and recording likewise; and I'm OCD about ICE too and I like things to work as the should. This is literally years of idle discovery too, so I can refer back to it myself. :)

Firstly, FM and Dab are bad and poor in the UK anyway - too crowded and too little bandwidth; dying too and internet radio is a 1000 times better (Radioplayer and BBC Sounds on Android Auto just about covers everything for me and mobile data reception is no longer an issue, almost everywhere) but if you really want it here goes. A little history: FM was always so so since whenever shark fins and window antennas did away with telescopic ones; if you've got good FM it's the area not the system - my Symphony II was pretty dire also. Audi's first diversity system up to about mid late 2006 was called a switch diversity system; later cars have what is known as a phase diversity system. The switch type is much harder to sort. It consists of two cables a blue HF FM/AM cable and a return IF (intermediate frequency; or ZF, Zwischenfrequenz in Audi's schematics) and power for the amp. Most double Fakras to single or ISO adaptors, with power, supply the power correctly but the ZF cable is useless, since it is a return. This ZF cable receives information, from the HU (Concert, Symphony and MK I RNS-E, all pre II+ phase) to tell the amp of the need to switch to another antenna. The amp has up to 3/4 antennas contained on the glass (rear for saloon, side windows Avant) and it chooses from these. These amps do fail, more on the saloons than the Avants but they also receive the signal from your remote fob, for the doors. Very poor range on your fob can be an indication of a failed amp (water ingress usually the cause, or cracked rubber pulling components off the board in the case of the saloon mostly).

I say 3/4 antennas, but there are only two Fakras, connected to the main amp: FM2 and 3 (at least on my Avant, in the picture) - there are further amps involved in the switching at other points. Theoretically, since I have not tried, you could by-pass the main amp, take FM 2 and 3 and directly connect them to the blue and curry IF/ZF cables but you would still need to provide amplification for the antennas, since most adaptors only provide power; it would still not be as good as true diversity because half of that function is missing; it would be a weak noisy signal mixed with a stronger one. You can then use the only known proper adaptor, I know of, for phase diversity systems: https://tinyurl.com/28jzsx7b.

Alternatively and preferably you could just use a new antenna altogether. If you want an OEM invisible installation and you have an existing shark fin one, then something like this, which I'm going to fit: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/265923946169?chn=ps&_ul=GB. Most every adaptor you can buy, from Connect2, all of 'em is wrong and will not work properly; and their info is almost always wrong too. You get some signal and power but it is poor. Many HUs (Chinese ones particularly) don't supply the full 12 volts either, from the amp cable; better to take that from somewhere else. A multi meter can tell you, if this is the case.

Audi in common with most other makes, never envisaged or wanted us to fit aftermarket systems. Most all HUs, including premium branded ones have just one FM antena plug; there were some makes that had true diversity duel attachments but they were for phase and they are no longer made, since these systems have long disappeared. I'll talk about the later phase diversity antenna in the next part, if anyone's interested.

FM diversity radio - Part II, Phase

A very popular retrofit, for some time, to fit MK I RNS-Es to post 2006 cars. The immediate effect is very poor FM, since these cars use phase diversity and the units switch. It was quite common to source early switch diversity complete systems (amps, cables etc.) either new or scrap, to remedy this; much to their regret when later fitting newer Android or brand sat nav radios. The reverse is true - bad FM - if a later MK II RNS-E is fitted to an earlier car with switch diversity.

The phase diversity system also switches between 3/4 antennas, but it sends two FM signals on 2 cables to the HU, which the HU then further chooses from. This is much easier to deal with, though still most of the adaptors provided are less than stellar. The adaptor I linked to earlier would work much better and would probably restore close to original OEM performance. These type: https://celsusice.co.uk/am-fm-phantom-adaptor-diversity-with-twin-fakra-kit, don't work very well, since they have no diversity function, despite what they say; they merely switch the amp on. With the phase diversity antenna, and one of these, you have a better chance of getting a better signal, but it will never be ideal. The principles of phase are similar to noise reduction - 2 perfect sine waves, 180% out of phase, will produce 0db. If you take two signals and split them into several frequencies or bands, you can play with those bands, to reduce background noise and interference, such as is behind Ray Dolby's invention. This kind of phase diversity is used for that purpose in radio mics, used in Television production, a few of which I have and it can work very well; and was an advance on switch, which is merely choosing between better signals, if that circuit is well designed. The RTA adaptor, I believe does contain the circuitry for proper phase diversity operation.

Again a completely independent new antenna is the best solution, with the added benefits in something like the shark fin, I linked to, of Dab and a stronger GPS signal too. GSM probably doesn't matter but I want to retain that too, since I have a modern cradle with inductive antenna boost attached in the armrest, that does still work. And this is the main reason, I am re-visiting this.

Interestingly, you can get 'covert' shark fin antennas, in a completely OEM style: https://sure-antennas.com/product/full-covert-audi-a4-a6-a8-shark-fin-antenna/. They are used by the police etc., for unmarked cars and can carry up to 15 different types of signal, for the various specialist equipment; so a quality shark fin can provide a very good signal of all types - it must be amplified too and the cheap ones often aren't or have very poor antena and amps. I don't think they are available to the general public. If they are, and you can just specify 3 or 4 signals, I imagine they are horrendously expensive and not the 50 or so quid of the one I linked to.

I should add the window mount antennas themselves can be a problem too, after so many years - contacts can have corroded and there can be trace breaks in them. The saloon's antennas share there space too wit the rear heater trace and when de-mist is selected often the FM signal suffers - this was poor design from the offing. Dab/+ if you want it is a whole other case and that definitely needs a good antenna (not the stick on windscreen type). The B8s were the first A4 Audis to come with the option; it was never available, as far as I know, for the B7s.

Nice read, the sharkfin eBay antennas dont work well for dab tbh, tried one, it's got a silly tiny stubby dab coil antenna inside, isn't really that good, gets allot of interference with the long wires coiled up, that's why dab antennas generally have short leads to a close by amp as you know better than me, the dab antenna direction design & cable length coils etc make a huge difference.

Interesting about phase, so I'm better to revert my switch to a phase & use the rta adapter to restore my FM to mostly working on aftermarket head unit, so does the rta use the existing antennas in rear glass for the dab aswell, saves fitting other dab antennas.

Thanks NHN, praise indeed! Yes, if you now have a modern sat nav radio fitted, you are much better off with the phase diversity system, if you still intend to use the OEM window antennas. I have not actually tried the RTA adaptor, and the literature is in German, but from what I can read it truly does, demux, for want of a better word, the 2 FM signals, as the original II+ radios and the MKII RNS-E; and should work with all modern single antenna plug radios. I would still recommend a modern good shark fin though - those traces are getting old now. The switch diversity will never work well with anything, except the old radios and possibly with the new with the workaround I mentioned - if you can amplify that signal.

Yes, Dab requires a completely different type of ariel to FM - not the case for our American cousins with HD digital radio -that shares FM spectrums. Modern car ariels work for both FM and dab but the B7 ariels are too old and wrong - splitters are useless. A completely new, preferably roof mounted ariel is the best solution for Dab. Though as I said Dab is p*** poor in the UK anyway, since much of it is still Dab and not Dab+ (we are the only country still with the old mpeg Dab) and some of the bandwidths are like really poor mono mp3.

As an aside, my GSM original shark fin might not fully cover 4G/5G neither and that is another reason I'm upgrading the shark; though I do get really good mobile reception and I can see a boost when it is in the cradle too.

Missed that bit! Good to know. Oh well I'll forget Dab altogether - no mind. I've gone through 3 dongles for my Android HU, they all break - the connections to the usb plug need re-soldering. Just tried again - 45 stations, nice reception with the HU out, as soon as I put it back - unrecognised. I'm done with dab. But FM working properly and the roof GPS would be nice. How did you find them on that score? Presumably FM not good either from what you're saying? I get good GPS from the ariel above the glove box; no less than 6 satellites but in some regions I've been to, that could do with help too. I have spent an age looking for a quality even suitable shark fin, that was the only one with all 3, I could find; I'm convinced they can work but maybe not the 50 quid one, as you suggest. I might talk to the covert guys, I'll go so far to get this right, just not too silly. Internet radio is fine, at the end of.

I might add for some completeness my idea to by-pass the switch diversity amp, might not work at all. I am not sure how the system switches to the best antennas at any one time, only that it requires the ZF signal from the HU, to operate fully and ZF cable carries the power from HU for the amp too. You might just end up with the 2 same FM antennas out of the 4, sometimes good signal, sometimes bad. Best to live with switch or forget it altogether if quality FM is important.

And I meant to write 180 degrees, not percent before - I spilt coffee on my old laptop keyboard and I am using a cheap external one, that I have to press hard, some letters and things get missed or are wrong.

Jus to clarify NHN - I should have read you more closely instead of all these posts, apologies - if you restore the phase diversity system to your car, and use the RTA adaptor, with an aftermarket system, I believe it may be highly likely you will get close to restored OEM FM performance. But no, this adaptor is only for FM, even with a splitter it is highly unlikely that the original windscreen antennas will ever work well with Dab, they are the wrong kind - if you do try it, your antenna feed for Dab will have to come after the adaptor - it may make nonsense of the Dab signal. Even the windscreen stick on cheapies, as supplied with the Chinese dongles, will be better, I believe - as I say I got 45 stations, when the HU was out today. This is why, unless you fit an unsightly dedicated external ariel, you are left with a shark fin solution. I'd be interested to know which one you tried that didn't work, this may be a better choice, if you are only looking for FM/Dab: https://celsusice.co.uk/brands/celsus/celsus-am-fm-digital-radio-dab-shark-fin-antenna. As I say I need GSM too and that's a harder find. I am pretty convinced that there is no other way - a good one must be better than the stick on ones, it's just finding it.

The VW Golfs, for example used both the shark fin and window antennas for diversity FM/Dab, unlike the Audis, I believe, though that may have changed. People complain about Dab in the newest cars and it has been mandated from 2021, in all new cars, even though internet radio is killing it. It's almost dead and buried before it got off the ground - Ireland and Canada have junked it; Sweden, Hungary and a few others have rolled back massively on it. Only Norway switched off FM and that only nationally - listening figures have gone through the floor and many Dab stations gone bankrupt there too. Any way, there you go, still nice if it could work.:thumbs up:
