You usually get teething troubles/ recalls etc, Especially when a product is rushed to Market. So quite what Audi's defence is will no doubt be bewildering.......

Cars in at Audi now.

There’s a recall that’s being applied also I’ve just been told.

They were pushing the Service plan too.

I saw a fairly new TSB few weeks ago, where the bulletin referred to a youtube video of the steering clicking noise, with it concluding to replace the steering rack as a fix. Wish I made a note of it or downloaded it as I cannot recall where it was.

They aren’t aware of any bulletin, she seemed to think the recall was for a software issue, probably the MMI update being as people complain it’s so buggy, so that means it’ll be worse when I get it back.

I’ve literally just had an Audi Cam and a tech telling me it’s like a new car with nothing worn yet

MMI update hmmmm.
Scoured my browser history for that bulletin, no luck.
Similar issue posted on VW* forums eventually resolved with replacement of steering rack.

I’ve been on Erwin this morning, nothing relating to a steering click.

No MMI update thankfully.

Piece of paper with a supplement to the owners manual. That’s the recall……lol.

2 weeks wait now, steering racks are on back order..........

Got mine done in a week buddy your dealer needs to advise Audi that your car is not road worrhy and is off the road to be able to jump the que ? That’s how they did mine. They then blag a new rack of the production line

Doesn't affect the way the car drives, am happy to wait...........

Your missing the point bud - ask them to advise the car is not road worthy to get it done sooner ? Lead times will always change if they don’t put a high priority on it ? You could be waiting months not weeks
But up to you

Little update.

After spending the last few days trying to get through to the service sept without success, I complained to Audi Uk, I finally get a phone call today, apparently oldham Audi tried to order a steering rack and the parts database told them my car hadn’t one fitted……

So now they have audi Germany involved who have authorised a new rack, but…… it’s still on back order.

You just couldn’t make this stuff up

Got mine changed in a week and that was done months ago. Your main dealer sound useless. Mine sorted it very quickly. There is a way round the back order process as long as your Audi dealer tells Audi your car is off the road

I just can't be bothered with it, my days of having dealer confrontations / spending time chasing Audi are over I'm afraid........

Anyway there is a good chance the car will be gone soon, so one less thing to be concerned about.

hope you get it sorted soon

I kinda knew what I was getting into with Oldham Audi, already had a run in with them in 2017 when they overfilled the FL RS3 with oil on a 1st service.

Trouble is, Stockport / Manchester are as equally terrible and I’d never go back to either.

I did consider @creweaudiparts but the distance means half a day to take it there and obviously several trips after that.

It’s a sad day when a main dealer just cannot deliver on service etc.

They are all sh*te, VW or Audi, VW changed my infotainment unit (and it was the larger version so ££) because the tech noticed (I hadnt noticed) lines on the screen ONLY when in reverse with camera operating..........guess what he had to change after I complained the lines were still there?

Audi have knackered an alloy (So did VW on my R, a right hassle that one, they watched the CCTV and saw the cleaning technician :tearsofjoy: bump the pressure washer into it (yes I also said ''What didnt you understand in DO NOT WASH MY CAR PLEASE?'') hassle over mechatronic on TTS, saying it was fine and no issues until I got the service manager to try and park it, they then lost my wheel locking key and denied it even though the boot floor and tools where all over the place.

The ONLY time I was ever ok with a service was on my R8's, maybe that's because the car had to be worked on by a Super tech? or maybe they just parked it around the rear and didnt touch it and charged me for it

It shouldn’t be the way but it is.

Stockport

Told me my car was ready, then went to collect and it wasn’t…..still applying a software update, they had me sat there for over an hour, car washed and you guessed it.

Manchester

Bought an S3 that came with 2 free services, come service time, you can guess what happened, salesman basically lied his butt off.
Took my 8P RS3 in for a noise when going over bumps, and bucket seat creak.
It still creaked after failed to diagnose it and the seat wasn’t any better.

Stafford

Thought foolishly I’d travel further afield, after all they are RS Specialist dealers……..
Car still creaked after they had it a week and replaced 1 shock absorber, when i asked them what about the other side, sorry sir we don't replace in pairs, hmmm not good practice then, i went and bought one myself and fitted it.

although they fixed the seat, but left the spline bolts holding the seat runners down all loose and left the Aircon filling point caps off, I found them in the wiper area trim.

Macclesfield

This is where the 8P RS3 went on it’s 3 month Holiday, as this is how long they had it for to diagnose the gearbox creaking issue when going over bumps etc……..

If it takes 3 months to track down a creak I’d say that’s ridiculous, and with zero updates inbetween.

I’d also had my 8V PFL into them after this with a clunking DSG box, again it was gone for 2 weeks with lots of test drives / head scratching and in the end they had to bring a ‘super tech’ in from MK Audi to help……..result ? Just a gearbox software reset, and the car exhibiting the same behaviour a week later.

You just lose all kind of faith that if the people who are ‘experts’ can’t fix these things, where do you go from there………

My new car has started whining from the front area whenever the steering wheel is off Center and the power steering is in a slightly firmer tension setting - car has only done 450 miles so far.

Not overly impressed there must have been 7+ months between the build of the two cars and they both do it!

Have logged it with my dealer now - told them if the steering rack has to be yanked I won’t be impressed on a brand new car.

Yeah not cool - yours got pushed back to October?

It also clicks on idle as well which I thought was the fuel pump / EVAP System but maybe it’s the rack as well?

They were waiting for a new rack to materialise.

Would be sooner but I’m off on holiday later next week so it can wait until I come back.

Strangely enough my clicking noise has gone quieter

Well at least you’re getting it fixed I guess - do you have faith that your Audi garage is gonna put it back together 100% properly? Who’s it booked in with?

I’m not entirely sure whether I want them to take the steering rack out of a brand new car if it is that which I’m guessing it is from the whine only ever coming off Center the minute you put the wheel straight the noise stops.

What’s strange is it doesn’t seem to make the whining noise when the wheel is in “light” to steer mode, when you up the speed a bit and the wheel gets firmer the whining starts when you turn it away from center.

Starting to think the clicking at standstill isn’t evap or fuel pump related but it’s also the steering rack.

Did they (dealer or Audi Assist) say it was 110% safe to drive as normal?

It’s been like this for months now and the car has been fine.

It’s quite a well known issue on Audis, there’s a guy I know with an RS6 and he said his does it, but he isn’t bothered about it as it’s a modified car and Audi will just say no anyway.

Did a TSB ever come out for this one in the end as the supplying dealer are a fair bit away so would be handy to reference a TSB if there was one with a few videos and sound clips to save the initial journey.

Not the last time i checked online there wasn't............but it's hard to refute it when you demo it to them.

You can also call out Audi Assist to check it.....

Might get them out to have a look then its logged at least and I'm covered if they say its safe to drive etc.

As long as the rack doesn't randomly fail on me whilst I'm going down the motorway then I'm all good I guess lol.

Called them and sent them videos

They said steering rack is normally clicking and not whining and by my VIN it should have been fixed apparently.

He said it was fine to drive but probably should be checked by a main dealer. So gonna get it booked in.

Yup the clicking comes from the ring gear

Could just be in my head but the steering feels a bit harder to turn in comfort mode above 30mph than the previous car I had?

Is the steering supposed to be quite light at most speeds in comfort/efficiency mode? Or does it weight up quite a bit when you get up to speed?

Worth checking the tyre pressure, as its getting a bit cooler, for me early sign, that tyre pressure is on the low side.

Yeah just checked instead of 39/35 they were 37.5 and 34.5 so gave them a bit of air will test it now thanks for reminding me!

Is everyone running 39/35 and generally thinks that’s the best pressure?

39/35 here to avoid uneven tyre wear.

So went out for a better drive tonight, again might just be in my head but the tension of the wheel doesn’t seem to change between dynamic/comfort/efficiency/etc when above 40mph and it seems to stiffen when braking too.

Is that the same as everyone else’s? I remember my older car having reasonably light steering in comfort and efficiency modes or with steering set to comfort but maybe I’m just remembering wrong because of whine noise coming from the front when the wheel isn’t centered.

New rack fitted finally.

There’s an issue though. Steering off centre so another trip to Audi…….

You can't make this up, they change the steering rack but don't do an alignment?
