Hi all,

Ok so having owned my 8V S3 73k miles, for about 7-8 months I noticed the idle was getting real lumpy at standstill and on the odd occasion auto stop/start would malfunction (back in March time . Did the obligatory googling and found plenty of threads about tensioners, timing chains, cam solenoids etc etc etc. Having had £1k's work done on it, I still have the same symptoms along with an intermittent fault code. The garage I use, who are indy specialists, won't do anything else to it until I get a permanent code, which I have had to accept but I am worried I may cause more damage or have to re-do the previous work if it's just left to permanently fault, who knows how long it could take!

So, Carista has been the tool I have used just to get a starting point with this issue and the codes that have consistently appeared are P0016/P0011.

To start with I had the car diagnosed by the indy on 25/3, they confirmed the timing chain and tensioner were duff.

They replaced the timing chain, tensioner and sprocket on 12/4 - this seemed to do the trick but they mentioned the cam adjuster valve might be clogged up and dodgy. The sprocket teeth had also sheared off so they had to replace it. Not sure how that was caused.

Eventually they replaced the 2 cam adjuster valves plus a new gasket on 18/6. Again this seemed to do the trick but after 10 days or so the symptoms came back. Took it back to them and they scanned and checked over, at which point they said without a permanent code they would be taking a stab in the dark. The intermittent code is now P0011.

I can't find anyone who's had all this work done on a VVT 2.0tfsi and not solved the issues. The only thing from Ross Tech that hasn't been done is to replace the J17 relay, which I am not sure the location of.

If anyone has had similar issues or can suggest anything I haven't looked at I would appreciate it!

Cheers

Not as yet Marky, the garage never mentioned that they may be the cause? I also haven't read anything anywhere that would suggest that but I guess it's worth a shot! It's in for its MOT at my local tomorrow so I could ask them to do it.

I had a really intermittent flight ideal, smooth as anything then all of a sudden, off beat. Then back to normal. Two of these(inlet and exhaust) fixes it. I ordered two Bosch ones from auto parts pro. The difference was night and day.

Just to update, got the P0011 code permanently now, it's been in with the indy today, they want to strip it down again, they think the timing is out or a part they put in has failed. Going back in on Friday 13th (gulp) for the work - fingers crossed it's something silly like being a tooth out!

Since the chain and tensioner have been replaced, agree with Marky79 that the magnetic timing sensors are worth looking at.

Out of curiosity, has the car been on variable service as opposed to annual?

Interesting, I'll bear that in mind and mention it when I drop it in next week.

It's been variable as far as I can tell, last done 8/2018, 7k miles done since.
