I was under the s3 over the weekend and had a new set of bilstein coilovers to fit to replace the tired kw V3 that had been working hard for the last few years with 50 thousand miles behind them it was time for a change and a bit of a softer ride, while I was in the position I had a go at the bushes and the wheel bearings and I had a good look round everything for peace of mind more than anything else.

I have just got back from the mot station where it was noticed that the leak from the steering was a bit much and needed to be sorted, but Saturday it had no trace of the leak and only did 11 miles between the two occasions it was jacked up

Luckily I had a good one on the shelf but I am more surprised by the speed of the failure, as I am often doing a 230 mile each way trip to Norfolk from Bristol and even though I have a good look around the car before the trip, I wouldn't have noticed this problem at all and if it can get to the point it was this morning after a 36 hour break and less than 20 miles

It is a very personal issue that I'm grateful for to have it happen here and not doing 69mph on the M4.
Anyone come across this before because I haven't heard anything like this before on the 8L or any other model

'leak from the steering' is a little vague...

8L's are prone to corrosion on the high pressure pipe running from the PAS pump and round the side of the box... they also leak from the small section of flexible hose just in front of the sump...

Pretty common for these to be replaced and well documented here on the forum..

Please can you also try and split long posts into paragraphs as it makes it very difficult to read all mushed into one...

Apologies, I did it in 2 halves and thought I sent it as such, I am grateful for your quick response, I was really referring to the speed in which the rack leak had started and the amount of deterioration was surprisingly high. It is the original part and the car is on 91k miles now on a 2000 y reg, which had a very high standard of history and was looked after by the same dealer that sold the car originally, I picked it up a year ago at 79k miles and impeccable condition inside and out
