I got a bare bam bottom end on order where's best for getting it chemically cleaned and the bores re honed and how much should I be looking at paying

What you planning with the block mate? I did my block with oven cleaner and a toothbrush and honed the cylinders with a stone hone on cordless drill..

Local engineer shop wouldn't charge too much I would think.. Hour labour?!

Planning on rebuilding it over the next few months and when its done get the badger5 turbo kit bolted to it and hope it doesn't go bang. I'm aware this could be a very expensive mistake but it's something I've wanted to do for a while. I'm not sure on the condition of the block or what size bore pistons it will have to go

Good luck with it mate. I would use stock pistons.

What is it your planning.? You have a bare block.. What about crank, rods, oil pump etc etc. Is that being sourced from other engine?

Yeah all that will have to be sourced weather it be new or from another engine.
If I can get away with using stock pistons I will do to keep cost down but I'm not sure on the condition of the bores yet. I also have another head that has been rebuilt off @superkarl which I pick up at the weekend but will need cams for that. And if it all goes tits up (which is likely)I still have my original engine to get a professional to do.
What I'm finding is most of the thread with details on doing this are all victims of photo bucket so no pictures

Regarding the crankshaft should I get s3 8l or the 2.0 tfsi one is there much extra cost in going stroker?

There's reconditioned 2.0 cranks on eBay for around the £290 mark and reconditioned s3 crank for £220 inc postage

Ian has just done this over the last 2 months hasn't he?

if you are considering a stroker - don't you want a bigger turbo? and if it is a bigger turbo at 1 bar it'll run cooler than a maxed out hybrid turbo at 22 psi? or have I misunderstood this? oh the fun - invite Ian over he's an S3 addict and can live in your annex tinkering with your engine for a free UK holiday :D

I'd love a bigger turbo but don't think the funds are there yet it's more just having it done for when they day comes as long as it will still preform with a hybrid. I don't think I've seen a 2.0 stroker hybrid build could be a very good reason for this

Bills done a couple...

...but most people that spank out on stroker builds generally pony up for a bigger turbo anyway hence not seeing much of this configuration... lets face it most 1.8t hybrids are derived from the TFSi K04 anyway...

Watch what they 'recondition'... not seen a 20v crank need reconditioning thats come from a running engine... even one with miles on it..

As for the 2ltr cranks... these are over 700 quid to buy these days as it would appear VAG cottoned on to their popularity and bumped up the price...

Be aware there are two types... cast and forged... just be sure to get a forged one and don't forget you will need to change the oil pump sprocket back to the 1.8t one...

Was there ever any firm outcome of using the 1.9 TDI cranks?

Rod angle is not good, needs very special pistons...

Some peeps use modified TDi blocks though but gets expensive and a little specialised on the machining work so not a popular route...

Ha ok see this is why I'm not an engine builder. These are things I need to take into consideration before go buying random stuff so it would be either standard crank and hybrid or stroker and gt 28/30

Are all the 1.8t crankshafts the same or is the amk/bam different from the 180bhp models?

Ok cheers just wanted to double check some are listed as a3,tt and a4

Old thread revival is the forged crank only on certain engine codes? Is it only a3 cranks or can I use a s1 crank

I thought you (tuffty) said TFSI cranks were sintered and not forged?

potatoes / tomatoes :D

I know one's wiggly and the other is straight and clampy..

why dont you use ALT crank since its essentially a stroked 2.0 AGN/APG motor and the crank is die-forged steel just like the TFSI crank.
