The last week I've been getting a damp smell from my air con - for maybe 30 seconds when you first turn it on then it goes. It's like if you've left washing in the machine for too long before taking it out to dry.

My car was serviced a couple of weeks ago and think a new cabin filter was fitted then. It's been really hot (by Scottish standards, like 20 degrees+) recently so i've been running the air con on 'low' more than usual but don't see why this would be the cause?

When you use your a/c in cooling condensation forms on the coil. If you turn it straight off the moisture sits and bacteria forms. You should switch the a/c off, or turn the temperature up to clear the coil before you stop.
