Cambelt change

Thats the service im dredding my A3 1.8TS is on 72k at the moment im guessing it has never been changed so will need to be how much we talking with the 75k service recommended by audi?

Do u think i should just go and get it done elsewhere or fork out at audi ideally i want my book stamped as it has a full audi history up to now?

i thought pre facelift S3s (by book) were more like 100k .... however, definately get it done @ 80k.

i paid was quoted £550 dealer (inc water pump etc) ...

http://www.autops.co.uk was £350, and there are very good at what they do. Ex AMD techs.

Personally, I wouldn't risk this up to 80K having read about cambelt failures well before this, especially on older cars. Apparently even some audi dealers are now recommending cambelt change every 4 years regardless of mileage.

Just had this done at 75k, (belt, tensioner and water pump) along with a Long life 2 service. £660 all in by a local independent.

Apparently 60k or 4 years is the latest Audi recommendation. £400 ish seems to be a typical Independent price and against a rebuild at £3k + it looks like cheap insurance.

Hi,

We have just had the water pump, cambelt and tensioner replaced on our Golf Anniversary (52 reg, 31000 miles). The water pump went over the weekend.

The water pump was replaced under warranty, but they asked us if we would like cambelt and tensioner done at the same time, to save on labour costs later.

I queried them about the 80K miles thing, but apparently (and I checked this with a quick phone call to another VW dealer) that there is a new directive regarding cam belts. The directive is: replace after 4 years old, regardless of mileage. I can only assume that this change-around in policy must come from failures.

Which has me slightly concerned about my S3, which is 4.5 years old, and 45K miles.

Really?

I thought it was 60k or 5 years? Anyhoo, that's the interval i'd run too.

Me thinks 4 years is a little paraniod, especially if you'd only covered 20-30k in that time. But obviously you're better safe than sorry.

They left my A3 7 years before they recommended a belt change!

If people are not going to a main stealers for this work it is worth asking the garage to make sure they replace the water pump with one that has a metal impella rather than the plastic ***** that Audi supply, its sposed to last a lot longer.

My S3 has just gone over 60ki, its booked in at my local garage that specialise in VAG for a service and cambelt change (with water pump and tensioners) they qouted £517 inc vat. After reading this forum i think thats a pretty good deal!

service is £180 + VAT

Cambelt, waterpump is £260 + VAT
