Dash clocks reset

After parking up for lunch today i returned to my car to find that the time and date had reset to something like 06 06 2001 and the time 00:00. The DIS also had reset but wasn't actually showing an average MPG or Average Speed until i pressed the reset button on the stalk. Any ideas why this could have happened?

Battery lost its charge or loose connection on the terminals?
