Ok first of all hello everyone im new here and new to turbo petrol car ownership and vag cars in general, ive got a 1998 A3 150bhp agu, it very slowly gets up to temp on the audi dial but when driving very quickly drops back down to 70 or even the needle totally down at the 60 mark, now my question is should it be doing this? Ive workedon cars for a number of years and id have though the stat would have kept the engine temp up at a more efficient working temp, i currently only see maybe 28mpg max really granny driving and it smells very rich, only mods are an s2000 filter and stainless catback exhaust, thanks, nath.

That sounds like a thermostat. Given the price of the coolant temp sensor I would replace that at the same time as chances are it will be on its way out as well
