Dash Cam Recommendation

If I get all the gear can you give me a hand fitting it pretty please :) ??

haha bit busy at the moment with the current renovation, but if you have any questions I can try to answer them.

Any good battery operated cam that I can charge nightly ? I don't want wire s across the cabin really

Just hide the wires away then. It's a pretty simple job, doesn't take long.

Be wary of any 'cheap' cameras that seem fine on the surface, but unable to decipher numberplates from poorer quality images... they just become decoration then!

Thanks will get ordering.

Make sure you get a standard fuse size so you can fuse tap the cig lighter, that is the only one which turns off when you switch ignition off.
Also make sure your piggy back fuse tap takes standard size

Really? I just went out to fit the camera into my car....I gave up! All the panels are so tight and even the door rubbers seem welded on! I gave up for fear of breaking something....

When I fitted this cam in my Evoque, the panels literally fell apart.....

Any tips for fitting without breaking anything? Why are the door rubbers on so tightly? Ive never had another car like it!

The wire is easily tucked under headliner, no struggling there. The A pillar you need to loosen the bolt hidden under the plastic airbag cover, open it with your fingers then use a hex key to slightly loosen the bolt for you to slightly undo the pillar and tuck your cable behind that. Door rubbers should be the easiest, are you pulling it the wrong way?

It should only open one way the rubber seals on the door

I got the feed wire for my TomTom hidden in the door rubbers in the A-pillar by just push the wire under from the inside. Worked very well.

I fitted my dashcam in about 10 minutes, cables are all out of sight and didn't even need a screwdriver. The cable easily tucks under the headliner, run it along the top then down inside the door rubber and under the glovebox. The only place where its visible is across the A pillar as I didn't want to risk messing around with an airbag.

You really don't need any skill etc to fit these devices. Please excuse the crap photos!

Cheers....
Will try again tomorrow.

Its always the same fitting bits to a new car, Im always overly cautious!

Funny, when Im trading in I literally rip the parts out and never do any damage....maybe I should adopt that approach from the off!

Can I ask what camera that is?

Well, went out again to fit my dashcam.....

Got everything sussed for fitting the cable etc.

I bought a fag lighter socket to fit in the area of the fuse box. Bought a piggyback fuse and fitted it all in place.....

End result? Nothing! Seems to be no power getting through the socket. Now that Im back in the house, Im wondering if the earth wasnt good enough......

Anyway, anyone want to buy a Drivepro 200? Im done and will buy something I can hardwire in, rather than something that HAS to plug into a fag lighter.

My Blackvue came with a cigarette lighter plug, you just cut it off and solder on a different plug instead, then wire it in to the fuse box.

As for the A pillar, you just undo the bolt and it'll pull out, and it's then very easy to thread the wires behind the airbag.

A 'poking stick' of some kind really helps too, something plastic so it won't damage anything.

I've got a Transcend Drivepro 200 with a transcend 32MB SD and have been using it for the past 5 weeks and cant fault it at all

Yeah, Ive got no issues with the Drive pro, it just that it needs a fag lighter to work. You can't really cut off the plug and use something else, as it will blow the unit.....it doesn't like 12 volts apparently!

yeah mines plugged into the cig lighter and routed under the glovebox and then into the door rubber. Temporary but does the job nicely

Cheers @chrise, looking to put one of these in my A3 when it arrives (should be around 6-8 weeks now), been looking at the blackvue and the lukas camera's which seem to have an amazing lens set up, video here guys:

I had the exact same problem and scratched my head for atleast 2 hours trying different fuses and things to work, guess what it was in the end.... to
the usb 12v to cig lighter was short!!! the end bit didn't touch the bottom and it wasn't making a complete circuit for camera to power on.

Make sure yours is long enough.

I used this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12v-Femal...100?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3cbccf1a7c

FYI this is too short,

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Dual-...499?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item27e4ddfee3

This is perfect

But the drivepro doesnt use a usb connection, its fag lighter only.....Hence my issue

Some troubleshooting ideas:

Does the female cigg adapter work with any other devices?
Has the fuse tap adapter been pushed all the way in?
Are the fuses pushed all the way in to the fuse tap?
Have you tried different fuses, faulty fuse? are they in the correct position?
Does the earth termination connected to a screw have a clean connection?
Are your crimp connections good?

I went for the DR650 and the install was pretty strait forward. I did spend a bit of time fettling the trim though. Video quality is great, as is the park mode function.
A power magic pro is a must ;)

Now that Im back in the house, Im wondering if the earth wasnt good enough......

When I "supervised" @The Challinor installing his Transcend, I "made" him scrape off the paint under the A pillar bolt (there were tears) in order to get a good earth, then tested continuity/resistance. It will almost certainly be a "bad earth" if you did not clear the paint from under the bolt (or use a serrated/star washer).

He also has a Transcend, I made up a cigarette lighter socket to piggy back fuse harness for him, and this is all stored neatly in the fuse box, and behind the dash trim, all hidden.

Cheers all....

Going to give it one more go......I think the earth is the issue.....thanks!

If it dont work this time, Im going to buy a skateboard and ditch any future cars....

Hi @zooankski , Your Blackvue 650 looks quite neat and tidy. That's my biggest concern with fitting a dash cam, I want as little wires on view as possible. From your pics it looks like the wires are going in to the plastic cover (near the rear mirror mount). Is this something that's easy to do? Did you remove the plastic cover or did they just tuck underneath as I really don't want to see cables hanging down the windscreen. Thanks.

I did this as well, my wires only have a few inches showing and they disappear straight into to the mirror housing. It was pretty easy to do - I removed the cover on mine (very easy) and filed a hole, and also lined the hole with a rubber grommet that I had cut in half just so it looks really tidy. I have a copper ferrule on the wire that runs front to back situated in the bit next to the lane assist camera then the wires go off to the passenger side A pillar and separate (one down the pillar, one following the headlining to the back of the car).

I'm looking to fit a Blackvue 600 in the next month or so. Was planning on tucking the sticky pad high up on the windshield beneath the shade bade so that the mount is out of direct sight in the shadow of the interior header trim.

Would it make that much difference to the captured image if the camera is offset to the left by it's own width ?

Exactly the same as cemerson. Removal of the mirror trim is easy. The ferite core you can see is only experimental to see if it was the correct diameter. Not had time to stash that yet. Install took about 2 hours but i did cloth wrap all my wiring to the power magic pro it the fuse box area ( being an avionics engineer goes hand in hand with neat wiring! )

Mine is right up against the mirror housing, and almost completely hidden by the mirror itself from my point of view. Only the bottom right corner just pokes out the side by a few mm, but you don't notice it after a day or so anyway. I found the biggest problem when mounting it was the curvature of the windscreen - if you install it so the lens is central then the sticky pad ends up on a bit that curves right, so it pans the whole camera right. If you install the sticky pad central, the lens is offset to the left, but it's not as bad. When the image is symmetrical the sticky pad ends up being just a bit to the right of centre (from inside the car), but the lens is offset to the left by a bit. This was perfect for hiding the camera behind the mirror anyway so it all works out!

That's the best option for diy. That's what I did for my Peugeot. I initially installed my blackvue in my audi, then I wanted parking mode and to hardwire it so got it done professionally

I'd avoid installing the dual camera blackvues as they are renowned for causing issues with dab radios like in the audi

Still to single camera blackvue or winycam ipixi. I've heard winycam ipixi dual cameras are fine with dab

My DAB reception is fine with the dual channel cameras. They've pretty much solved that now.

Anyone fitted a rear view cam using their cig lighter in the boot (hatch) if so which cam and which way did you go with the wires?

TY :)
